Boys Soccer Moves to 1-0-1
The Sleepy Hollow varsity boy's soccer team had their second game of the season against Saunders (Yonkers) on Thursday. The final score was 1-1. Sleepy dominated the possession aspect of the game early on. Most of the first 20 minutes were played in Saunders half of the pitch. Sleepy had many shots but could not finish them off. Towards the end of the first half Saunders got a lucky goal on their first shot of the game and went into halftime with a 1-0 lead. Sleepy came out strong at the beginning of the second half and was rewarded with their play in the early minutes with a goal. It was scored by junior Matthew Praino and was assisted by freshman Demetri Boumis. The game lasted about another two or three minutes before the referees called the game on account of lightning storms. This was unfortunate for Hollow based on the fact that they were playing determined and started to dominate play again. Some stand out players for Sleepy were senior sweeper T.J. Kent, and junior midfielders Christian Zhinin and Matthew Praino. Hollow's next game is against Byram Hills on Monday, Sept. 20.
On Sept. 11 the boys won their season opener against Alexander Hamilton with a score of 7-1. Striker Pacome Gore set the tone of the game by scoring two goals in the first half. Midfielder Matt Praino and striker Mark Sanchez also scored goals in the first half. Gore scored two more goals in the second half to finish the day with four goals. The goals were assisted by the following players: 2 by Matthew Praino; 2 by Demetri Boumis; 1 by Juan Pablo "Petey" Loja; and 1 by Thomas Carraro.
Cross Country Leads the Pack
On Tuesday, Sept. 14, the boys and girls Cross Country teams competed against Ossining, Pleasantville, and Westlake. Sophomore sensation David Maldonado led the Horsemen by placing 2nd overall and shattering his personal best by almost 1 minute. He was only 5 seconds behind the leader. 8th grader, Henry Hargitai, placed 9th overall and also broke his personal best. Lucas Schaffer, Gadi Langsam, Richie Doyle and John Sampaio rounded out the top 7.
On the girls' side, junior standout Katherine Doyle ran against the boys and placed 10th overall. Her time was over 4 minutes faster than the top girls' time. Sophie Simon had a nice race placing 3rd overall. Rookie Emily Hargitai, placed 11th.
Cross Country's next meet is Tuesday, Sept. 21, at Rockwood Hall.
Field Hockey on a Roll
The Varsity Field Hockey won their third game of the season defeating Fox Lane 2-1 on Wednesday, Sept. 15. After falling 1-0 in the first half the Lady Horseman bounced back with goals by Vali Morales assisted by Chloe Smercak, and Jennifer Angevine assisted by Gabby Cellante. It was another great performance by senior goalie Daniela Uribe with 13 saves to seal the third win of the season.
The girls will return to action on Monday, Sept. 20, when they take on Horace Greely away starting at 4:45.
On Monday, the field hockey team pulled off a 1-0 win against Edgemont. Senior Andrea Alvarez scored with three minutes left in the second half on scramble in front of the cage. Daniela Uribe recorded 11 saves
