SHHS Students Design 150th Anniversary Float for St. Patrick's Day
Tarrytown Union Free School District
In celebration of Sleepy Hollow’s 150th anniversary, Sleepy Hollow High School (SHHS) students worked together to create a unique float for the village’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade on Sunday, March 10, 2024. Comprised of found materials the float was created in collaboration with students from Art Teacher Jane Lawrence's sculpture class, Art Teacher Kristen Dreher's art club, and Special Education Teacher Laura Mastrosimone's special needs class. In a joint effort the students created giant pumpkins, the iconic Sleepy Hollow lighthouse along with waves representing the Hudson River. A silhouette of the horseman was featured along with a very glittery green “150” to celebrate the momentous occasion.
Ms. Lawrence, a resident of Sleepy Hollow for the past 12 years, felt honored to be part of the celebration.
“It’s become this community project and it’s nice to see students work together. My colleagues have been wonderful, they have provided great advice and materials to build the float, such as recycled cardboard and newspapers,” said Ms. Lawrence. “It’s such a sweet and fun project and I feel really happy about it. So many of the students are already volunteers in the community, such as volunteer firefighters.”
In a joint effort the SHHS students were able to bring the float to fruition. From concept to final product they worked together, proving that teamwork along with a common vision can result in something beautiful.
Spiros Doupis, a freshman at SHHS and a volunteer firefighter for the village, lent a hand fabricating the float.
"Representing Sleepy Hollow and helping build the float after school meant a lot to me. It made me feel like I’m part of this big wonderful team,” said Spiros. “I wouldn’t choose any other team to be on.”
