Sleepy Hollow Football Club Continues to Win in Week 3
150 players from AYSO and Sleepy Hollow Football Club prepare to March at the Sleepy Hollow High School Football Game Saturday

With rain threatening and many games played on muddy fields, the Sleepy Hollow Football Club’s (SHFC) youth soccer teams won 8 of their 11 matches on Sunday September 21. SHFC has represented their new partner Rivertowns United Soccer Club well with a record 21 wins, 5 losses, and 6 ties after 3 weeks of play. The fledgling club and all of AYSO were honored to march at the Sleepy Hollow High School football game halftime show Saturday. Superintendent Christopher Clouet and Athletic Director Chuck Scarpulla made this first time honor for our largest local youth sport possible. One hundred fifty out of 650 registered children participated.
Below is the recap of this weeks games.
A balanced team effort allowed the under age 9 Magic girls to defeat the Rye Strikers 5 – 0 at Tarrytown’s Washington Irving School. Coach Mac McLaurin’s squad scored first with goals by Anastasia Mazon and Shea Bertolacci. Successful shots in the second half by Nicolette Cioffi, Emily Orellana and Emily Rypka led to the final tally. The Magic were also paced with all-around solid play by Talia Lieberman. Next Sunday the Magic will visit Rye to face the Spirit at 2:30pm.

A very competitive home game at Washington Irvine for the U9 boys Warriors, led by coaches Colin Gallagher, Chris Junge, and Todd Dorman, resulted in another Warrior win against the New Rochelle Cobras. H. Jercinovic put the Warriors ahead near the end of the first half. Some excellent keeper saves by C. Gallagher, T.junge and J.Arnegger kept the scoreboard in positive territory. These lads ran their hearts out and slept well Sunday evening. The boys next face the Castleford Wave at Washington Irving Sunday at 1:15.
The U-9 Boys Sentinels notched their first victory of the season with a convincing 5-2 win over the Rockland FC Raptors. Next week the team takes on the Pelham Hotspurs at home.

The under age 10 girls Red Angels captained this week by Priscilla Arteaga and led by coaches Mike Levine and Nick Tsilibes, had an awesome comeback victory against the Larchmont Blue Phoenix. After being down by two goals, Thalia Tsilibes scored three second half goals, her second consecutive hat trick, to lead the charge. The team again was anchored by a strong defense with major contributions from Isabella Levine, Ywomie Mota and Samuella Schroeder. The girls next face Pelham at Washington Irving Sunday at 2:30.
Fergus O’Sullivan’s U10B Legends had their first trip to NYC, playing the Manhattan Toros on Randalls Island. Massimo Soto and Javier Villa were imperious on defense while Kyan Aguilera channeled Franz Beckenbauer playing sweeper. Towards the end of the 1st half Jai Weitzen shot from the right; it was probably going in but Max Matailo made sure from 6 inches, tying the game at 1. In the 2nd the Legends pressed but the Toros played great defense. Keeper Kieran O’Sullivan pushed a low drive around the post as the Toros almost stole it on the counter. With 2 minutes left Kenneth Suqui sprinted to (barely) keep the ball from bouncing over the sideline and then set off on a mazy run beating 2 defenders (one of them multiple times !) before stretching to chip a ball over the keeper from a narrow angle. On a muddy field the away shirts were no longer white but the smiles were certainly wide. This Sunday the Legends face the Mt Pleasant Lions at Washington Irving at 3:45 pm.
The U11G Strikers traveled to the upper east side to play the Asphalt Green Club. Matt Evans’ squad started the game with an aggressive attack, with Abby Oppenheim, Juliana Largess and Michelle Quispe each scoring a goal in the first half. The Strikers’ vaunted defense lead by Grace Vacca and Dylan Zednik kept the opposition scoreless until a last minute Hail Mary of a shot gave the home team one consolation goal. The coaches are pleased with the team’s progress. The Strikers next play the Gotham Girls at Losee park 12:30 on Sunday.
The boys under age 11 Tornadoes led by coaches Todd Dorman, Scott Burnett, Colin Gallagher, Todd Smith and Glen Taylor, met the previously undefeated Manhattan Rockers on Randalls Island, in a mud-soaked game that left coaches and parents alike calling for heart medication. Coming back from 2-0, the Tornadoes managed to tie the game with seconds left in the first half. In the second half the Rockers went up 4-2, but the Tornadoes answered with four consecutive goals--including a highlight-reel bicycle kick into the goal by Oliver Monteforte, off a beautiful punt from Tornadoes’ keeper Carlo Ricchiuti--to win the game 6-4. Ricchiuti and keeper Todd Smith made valorous saves throughout the game. Goals were scored by Burnett (penalty kick), Burnett, Gallagher, Monteforte, Monteforte, and Monteforte. D. Dorman served up three wily assists. This Sunday the Tornadoes face Yonkers Rush Attack at Losee Park at 3:30.
The under age 12 girls Mustangs led by coach John Sutherland easily handled undefeated Edhemont 2-0 at Washington Irving. Goals were scored by Talia Fante and Julia Costa with an assist earned by Emma Clarke. Catherine Grimes stopped a penalty shot to preserve the shutout. The Mustangs next play on the road vs Eastchester Sunday.
The under age 13 girls Horsemen traveled to Stepinac High School in White Plains last Sunday where they tied the Rye Rattlers 2-2. Both goals were scored by Anabel Ives as the Horsemen jumped out to a 2-0 lead. The Rattlers managed to tie the score with less than five minutes left to play. It was a solid effort all around for the Horsemen as they picked up their first point of the season. They travel to Yonkers this coming weekend to face off against the Yonkers United Rush Raptors.
The under age 13 Boys Tornadoes tied a very talented Scarsdale Madird Team 2-2. Ahbi Weltig opened the scoring in the first half with a left-footed bullet to the bottom corner but Scarsdale roared back with two of their own to take the lead 2-1 early in the second half. Scarsdale had three penalty kicks but Nolan Fairley thwarted them all to keep Tarrytown close. Michael Richards made some nifty moves in the box where he was tripped up and DJ Cronin hit a hard drive to the middle of the net to convert on the penalty kick. Joe Cioffi had a strong game leading a disciplined and structured defense as did Mayran De Oliveira and Aaron Andrade. The boys next game is Sunday versus Apshalt Green Wave at 1:15 PM at WI Lower.
The Girls U14 Eagles lost a close and hard fought match this week 1-2 to the West Side Red Bulls. The defense, led by keeper Emily Jeris, Zarina Nabi and Colleen Rode, kept the Eagles close as the offense struggled until Taylor Burnett scored in the last seconds of the match. The difference in this match was an unlucky “own goal” in the second half. The Eagles will be on their home turf next week at Dobbs Ferry HS to take on the Rye Riptide.
