Sleepy Hollow Football Club Mustangs Celebrate Fall Championship

Sleepy Hollow Football Club Fall Season Finishes Strong. Warriors and Mustangs Win Championships.
For most teams last Sunday was the final game of the inaugural season for the Sleepy Hollow Football Club. Nearly every team finished in the top half of their division with two teams clinching championships. Four teams still have one more game left to play next week and one team still has a championship on the line. With last Saturday’s make up games included the club had 6 wins, 6 losses, and 1 tie for the weekend. This brings the season total to an impressive 55 wins, 29 losses, and 16 ties. Below are the score reports provided by the all-volunteer coaches.
In a rematch of a hard fought 4-3 win in week two, the girls under age 9 Magic fell this week to the Scarsdale Blue Santos. After falling behind 2-0, a Magic comeback was paced by Shea Bertolacci who knocked home two breakaway goals early in the second half. However, both of the striker’s scores were ultimately answered by Scarsdale resulting in a 4-2 finish. Despite the loss, the Magic showed unrelenting defense led by this week’s co-captains Amy Torres and Katie Andruss, as well as Talia Lieberman, whose clearing kicks stifled several Scarsdale advances. The final minutes of play were dictated by the tenacity of the Magic, with Emily Orellana, Nicolette Cioffi and Natalie Rypka all having solid shots on goal before the time expired. The Magic are 6-3 heading into their final match of the regular season against the FC Transylvania Red Storm at Washington Irving Field, Sunday, 11/16, at 3:00pm. Coached by Mac McLaurin, Tom Andruss and Steve Lieberman, the Magic will compete in the Somers Fall Classic on the 22nd.

With a 4-0 win over Rivertowns Rangers the under age 9 boys Warriors closed out their first season with an undefeated record and division championship when they played away today at Concord Road. Early in the fist half, Will Dorman found the net from a free kick with a classic arching ball to just under the bar. Not long after, Kallen Fairley pushed an amazing ball through from Midfield and Sebastian Hernandez knocked it in. Just before the first half finished Leo Jercinovic set up a perfect ball for Declan McCarthy who made it number 3. The second half saw Luke Wuerffel, Tucker Junge and Aaron Bell keep their keepers safe with some excellent defense. Roberto Molina took a wonderful free kick finding the net off the post but it was disallowed, as it was indirect. John Arnegger, Hugo Jercinovic and Eli Krajovan did some great running in offense. The final goal was a scramble that bounced back off the keeper and was knocked in by Callum Gallagher. Coaches Colin Gallagher, Chris Junge and Todd Dorman are very happy with the Warriors first season and look forward to moving up to a higher division in the spring.

The under age 10 girls Red Angels captained this week by Isabelle Murphy played a tough game, losing for the first time this season to a talented team in the Briarcliff Blaze 0-2. The Red Angels have their last regular season game on November 16th at Losee Field against their sister club the Rivertowns United Falcons. The under age 10 boys Legends coached by Fergus O’Sullivan, Herb Weltig, and Mike Weitzen closed out their first club season with a terrific 6-0 victory over a Chappaqua team that had a strong season to this point. In the first half Chappaqua nearly scored on a breakaway but thereafter the defense of Kieran O’Sullivan, Justin Cruz and Julian Bermeo, back from injury and playing Sweeper, restricted their chances to long range shots, ably dealt with by Keeper Max Matailo. Mid-way through the half Nikhil Weltig slid a through ball in for striker Javier Villa who stroked it into the corner; Brandon Morocho followed a few minutes later with a blistering shot, high into the net from a narrow angle. After the half the Legends blitzed the opposition with 4 goals in 15 minutes; first Adrian Rodriquez ran on to a through ball and hit a drive low to the keepers right - it hit the post and rebounded across the goal to the edge of the area where Max Matailo smashed it high into the net; Julian Bermeo playing striker swept a cross into the corner; 30 seconds later Kyan Aguilera danced through the opposition and curled a drive into the top corner; lastly Javier Villa, now playing left defense half volleyed a clearance from a corner high into the net. Over the season the boys displayed tremendous versatility - everyone played keeper, everyone scored, and everyone developed their soccer skills and soccer i.q. They finish with 4 Wins, 3 Losses and 2 Draws with 26 goals scored and 16 conceded. The season will finish with a tournament in Somers on the 22nd.
The under age 11 girls Strikers had a rough weekend. It started Saturday with their second game against their rival the Mt. Pleasant Red Hot Chili Peppers. Mt Pleasant was lucky enough to sneak a goal at a tight angle past the goalkeeper and the post. The Strikers tried to press the forward for the rest of the game. They had several attacking chances but were unable to find the back of the net to tie the game. Sunday the Strikers second game for the weekend was also their last of the league season. They played the Larchmont Blue Eagles who were very hyped up and their goalkeeper did a great job making 10 saves keeping the Strikers to one goal. This was after the Blue Eagles made two quick goals on the unsuspecting Strikers. The Strikers also hit the post and crossbar of the goal at least five times adding to the frustration of the team. The Strikers still finished in fourth place in their division even with these two losses. They had a final record of 4-2-2. The Strikers are looking forward to the Somers Tournament on 11/22 to end their fall season on a high note!
The under age 11 boys Tornadoes lost 1-4 on Sunday at Losee to the Riverdale Falcons, with the single home goal scored by Z. Burnett. Goalie T. Smith made several incredible saves to keep the score tied 1-1 at the half, but the Tornadoes were not able to hold and convert in the second. After moving into club level play last spring and keeping a perfect record with all games but one won by the maximum allowed 6 goal differential, the Tornadoes were moved up two divisions for this fall. They finish in the middle of their new division with 3 won and 6 lost, though they also defeated the division’s first place team, the Manhattan Rockers, by two goals back in September. The team intends to scrimmage the Falcons at home this coming Sunday with a great deal of vigor and finish out the season at the Somers tournament on November 22. The boys look forward to a tough and educational second half of the season this spring. This report contributed by coach Todd Dorman.
The under age 12 girls Mustangs led by coach john Sutherland gave the first place undefeated North Salem Sparks their first loss in over a year in a rescheduled game at North Salem 3-1. Julia Costa scored first off an assist by Sophie Sylves-Berry, then Maya Weitzen scored second with Talia Fante assisting, and Talia finished scoring with a penalty kick. Keeper Catherine Grimes made several crowd-pleasing saves that kept the Mustangs in the game early. The Mustang defense gave up only one goal to the leading offense in the league, which was only the third goal surrendered for the year. On Sunday the Mustangs finished their season against the Mt Pleasant Wildcats with a 3-0 win. Julia Costa, Sophie Sylves-Berry, and Britany Alban scored goals with two assists by Julia Costa and one by Sophie Sylves-Berry. The division-leading defense led by Maddy Navin, Annie Dineen, Sadie Swenson, with keepers Catherine Grimes and Carolina Lopez earned their 6th shutout of the year. The Mustangs clinched first place in division 3 with a perfect record of 9 wins, no losses, and no ties. They will be moving up to division 2 in the spring. They will face out door competition in the Somers Fall Classic tournament in two weeks and plan to play in the in doors Chelsea Piers Connecticut Winter Youth Soccer League with their first game this Saturday vs. New Canaan.
The under age 13 girls Horsemen ended the Yonkers United Rush Raptors undefeated season with a 2-0 win at Washington Irving Lower Field this past Sunday. On a beautiful day for soccer, Grace Morgan opened the scoring with a fifth minute shot that found the back of the Yonkers goal. From there the team dominated the first place Rush Raptors for long stretches of the match allowing the visitors only two quality scoring chances, both saved by Jennifer Stewart in the Horsemen goal. The girls played the consummate team game and were rewarded with a second goal five minutes from time to put the game out of reach for the visitors. Jessica Cowles’s perfectly placed shot found the upper right corner of the net off a failed clearing attempt by the Yonkers defense. Having lost 0-2 in the first leg of the season home-and-home series, the Horsemen faced an opponent that had scored 20 goals so far this season while allowing only three. The third place Horsemen finish their fall season next Sunday morning against the Chappaqua Hurricane at Springhurst Field. With a win they have a chance to move into second place and advance a division in the spring. This report contributed by coach Tom Schumacher.
In their last game of the season the under age 13 boys Tornadoes travelled to Scarsdale to put an exclamation mark on a successful season with a resounding 8-2 victory over the Scarsdale Madrid. By the five-minute mark in the opening half Joey Morquecho had already found the back of the net off a pass from Jonathan Orellano just outside the box. Ahbi Weltig netted his 6th of the season shortly thereafter and Michael Richards continued his three game scoring streak with a great shot just before halftime. Scarsdale Madrid came close to scoring at the start of the second half but Nolan Fairley made a diving stop off a shot from 10 yards out. Sebastian Campuzano came out from center mid to drill one home and make it 4-0. Scarsdale Madrid was awarded a penalty kick for a tackle inside the box and scored to make it 4-1. Michael Richards added his second of the game but an own goal shrunk the lead back down to 3 goals at 5-2. The tornadoes never looked back as Joey Morquecho added his second, Adam Geisker scored on a counter and Sebastian Campuzano added his second from an organized center mid attack with two minutes to play. Aaron Andrade and Joe Cioffi both had very strong games again at the center back position limiting the opponent’s opportunities. DK Cronin again also had an excellent game as a playmaker with 2 assists. The Tornadoes recorded a season high 92 passes and dominated the possession game. The Tornadoes will finish in the top half of Division 4 with 13 points, 24 goals for and 20 goals against.
The girls under age 14 Eagles played to their first draw this Sunday against the Yonkers Rush Ravens on the turf at Fleming Field in Yonkers. The ball spent most of its time in the Ravens defensive end but was too smart to be netted. On the offensive end, Samantha Allen and Julia Friedman gave good effort, while Molly Greenholz was outstanding in the midfield keeping the ball in offensive play. The Ravens best chances came during breakaways that were shutdown by the swift and tough defensive play of Fiona Wozniak and Isabelle Ripin. Keeper Emily Jeris again played an outstanding match earning her third shutout of the season. The Eagles will play their final match of the season at home against the DUSC Strikers with the winner guaranteed at least a second place finish and a chance to move up to the elite first division.
