Sleepy Hollow Football Club has Spring Start Rained Out

Losee, Hackley, Peabody, Pennybridge, Pocantico, and the Lakes fields all closed for Spring debut.

The spring season got off to a soggy start with many games postponed on April 2nd as all grass fields in Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow were closed. Only the new turf field at Washington Irving saw action. On April 9th many teams were scrambling to find players as many families were out of town for the holiday school break. Rains kept several grass fields closed as well. Despite these hardships the club managed to have 11 wins, 5 losses, and 3 ties. This is more impressive considering that 10 out of 17 teams were promoted to higher divisions (two up two divisions) and face tougher competition. The club now heads into Easter break with the next games scheduled for April 23rd. Club tryouts will soon occur on Saturday May 6th, likely at the High School turf field, so save the date and mark your calendars. Below is the game reports provided by the all-volunteer coaches for the first two weeks of the spring season.

On April 9th they won their first game of the season by two ways. They won before the game started as the other team forgot their line up cards and had to forfeit the game. On the field they won the game 3-0. Down 5 kids and two coaches with the school holidays, the comets called in the cavalry meaning the Blaze. Coach John Sutherland led the troops and Gemma Fante added the firepower, scoring all three goals in the first half. Big thanks to them for helping out. Mia Martinez, Kim Molina, Samantha Mendietta, Kate Livingston, Jhoselyn Pugo and Samantha Marvin all had strong games holding the Eastchester Leopards scoreless

Coached by Matt Weidner were demoted to division 4 after losing several key players in the fall. Their fist game was pulled by Mamaronek because of wet fields.

On April 9th they opened their spring season with a 4-2 win over the Valhalla Vikings. The first half saw a lot of back and forth play, but the Warriors opened the scoring with a beautiful cross and finish to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. After the break the Vikings countered by scoring two quick goals to take a 2-1 lead. The Warriors responded with good aggressive play and scored the equalizer by pouncing on a loose ball after a well struck direct free kick. The Warriors then secured the win with two more goals, both resulting from good passing and finishing.

On Sunday April 9th, coached by Mike Levine, Nick Tsilibes and Tracey Koch, the Cyclones started the season strong with a 3-3 draw against the Yonkers Orioles, a solid team that finished first in their division last year. The Cyclones opened with 2 goals within the first 10 minutes to take a 2-0 lead. The goals were scored by Isabelle Murphy and Thalia Tsilibes. Yonkers scored 3 goals before the end of the half, leading 3-2 at the half. In the second half, the game was very competitive, with Angie Santos scoring in the last 2 minutes to tie the game 3-3. 2003 Girls Strikers

Started division 4 play with a convincing 5-1 win. Matt Evans’ girls played a strong game while dominating the possession. First half ended with a 3-0 advantage with goals made by Caroline, Melanie and Emma C. In the second half Chappaqua came out attacking and grabbed a quick goal, but the Strikers reacted with a pair of goals by Melanie, giving her a hat-trick on the day. Game ended with a 5-1 win.

The Strikers had their second home game April 9th on a beautiful day at Washington Irving School. The opponents from Larchmont held strong defense during the first half. The Strikers had much better possession putting together some great passes, getting into goal scoring range. However most of the shots found them going right to their goalkeeper. Right before the second half, our opponents started attacking and a miss kick clearance from the defense gave them a clear shot finding the back of the net. The second half found the Strikers kicking up their tempo, building up more scoring opportunities and again finding their shots going right to the goalkeeper. Finally Melanie was able to get a hard shot out of the reach of the goalkeeper and evening up the score. The Strikers continued to press but unable to find the winning goal. Game ending in a 1-1 tie.

2002 Girls Mustangs

Remained in division 1 and opened on the road at defending champions Briarcliff. The Mustangs outplayed the Burn with 240 passes, control of possession, and multiple scoring opportunities against the Burn offside trap. Arianna Vizcaino returned to the Mustangs for spring ball and put the Mustangs ahead 1-0 with a 20-yard blast to the upper outer corner of the goal. The Mustangs had no subs compared to Briarcliff’s 4 and eventually became fatigued. The Burn tied the game with a wind-aided shot over the Mustang keeper’s hands. The Mustangs pressed late but had to settle for the tie.

On April 9th the Mustangs had to forfeit to White Plains because not enough players were available due to the holiday break. They next face top ranked undefeated Yorktown at Washington Irving field April 23rd at noon.

2002 Boys Los Gauchos

Goals from Alex Guaman, Mateo Lewis, Jack Taylor and Franklin Peña. Assists by Mateo, Derek, Gabriel, Franklin, Victor & Oliver.
