Sleepy Hollow Football Club -- Week 3
Game summaries for SHFC action from Winter as well as weeks 1-3 of our Spring 2018 season
Junior Varsity Mustangs (2002 Girls)
The Mustangs coached by John Sutherland finished off a successful winter season featuring indoor practices and participation in a competitive league played at Chelsea Piers Connecticut. This league was compromised of older varsity and premier squads. The Mustangs fared well winning their playoff bracket, defeating the varsity squads from Stanford High School and Greenwich High School, and finishing 3rd overall for the entire league. The Mustangs also placed second in a spring tune-up tournament defeating two teams from the Pennsylvania soccer academy T.A.S.S. and ultimately losing 1-2 in the championship game to a premier Connecticut team from the Revolution academy after tying 1-1 earlier in the tournament. The girls then played two outdoor scrimmages against different varsity Rivertowns United squads losing 0-4 and winning 3-0.
With all this preparation the Mustangs opened the spring season strong tying top ranked North Salem 1-1. Their lone goal was scored when Talia Fante sent a pass back to Maya Weitzen who placed a chip shot over the forward playing North Salem keeper. North Salem later tied the game off a great toe shot into the far corner of the goal allowed by a small defensive lapse. The following week the Mustangs were not ready to play after staying up late celebrating star mid-fielder Brittany Alban’s Quinceanera. Five key players missed the game and the young ladies fell 1-4 to the Downtown United Soccer Club. Talia Fante scored the goal with the assist earned by Abigail Oppenheim. In week three the Mustangs rebounded defeating the Largemont /Mamaroneck squad 6-1. Six different palysers scored: Sophia Khosrowshahi, Annie Dineen, Arianna Vizcaino, Talia Fante, Carolina Lopez, and Evelyn Chacha. Sophia and Evelyn earned assists as well. Lilly Rodriguez had two more assists, while Grace Ryan and Britany Alban had one each. Julia Costa was perfect at keeper since the opponent’s only goal was late in the game when Julia was resting on the sideline. The Mustangs next face the Westside Red Bulls with a chance to move into first place in the top division.

Legends (2005 Boys)
On Sunday, the Legends (2005 Boys) lived up to their name; translating the fantasy tale of triumph over the Dale of Scars, into glorious reality. Maintaining their discipline, unlike their rivals, the Legends overcame a half time deficit to prevail 5-1 with all players having standout games and Julien and Nikhil (4 times !) unlocking the secrets to hitting the back of the net of wonders. The Legends lead the table (2W, 1T) after 3 games.
Fusion (2008 Boys)
The 2008 Boys Team Fusion, which had gone undefeated in Fall 2017 play and won its division, was moved up a few divisions for competitive Spring 2018 play. Fusion’s first game on April 15 against the Don Bosco Hawks resulted in a 6-0 Fusion loss. Despite Fusion’s attempts to pressure the ball, the Hawks outran Fusion from the game’s outset in dreary conditions.
Fusion’s April 22 away game at the Briarcliff Bulls ended in a 3-2 heartbreaker, in a hard fought game with many lead changes. In minute five, Ian Papadopoulos scored on a pass from Jack Zhunio. Briarcliff scored close to halftime on an intercepted goal kick. In the second half, Edwin Dutan was attempting a shot on goal when he was tackled by the Briarcliff goalie, resulting in a penalty. Jezrael Panama converted the penalty kick, putting Fusion up 2-1. Briarcliff scored two goals in the game’s final minutes – one from a penalty kick and one where Briarcliff was able to outrun the Fusion defense. Coaches George Papadopoulos and Ken Mackiewicz were pleased with Fusion’s defensive pressure and many shots on goal. There was strong goalkeeping from Dylan Pasato, Dylan Largo, Jack Zhunio and Edwin Dutan, each of whom blocked additional Briarcliff scoring attempts.
Team Fusion is looking forward to a competitive spring season. Team Fusion is comprised of players Pierce Davis, Kieran Degen, Edwin Dutan, Dylan Largo, Aiden Lee, Sean Mackiewicz, Jezrael Panama, Ian Papadopoulos, Dylan Pasato, Julian Patino, Justin Paute, Raul Socualaya and Jack Zhunio.
