Sleepy Hollow Football Club: Week 4 Game Recaps and Preperation for Upcoming Open Tryouts

The club extension of Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow AYSO - Sleepy Hollow Football Club wraps up Week 4 of the Spring Season

The games on Sunday May 3rd were the culmination of another week of hard and fun work put in by the players, coaches and administrators of the Sleepy Hollow Football Club (SHFC). The SHFC is the club team extension of Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow AYSO. SHFC teams practice one night during the week, again on Saturday and put it all to the test on Sunday.
Open tryouts for the SHFC Fall Season are this coming Saturday, May 9th. If you have a young player that is looking for the club challenge or just a little curious to see what goes on at the tryouts come on out this Saturday. More information on the open tryouts can be found at http://www.aysotarrytown.com/club.html.

Here are game recaps from this past Sunday.

U9 Girls – Magic
The SHFC Magic evened their record as they got passed the New York Rush Patriots score 3-1 at Tibbetts Brook Park. The second consecutive win for the girls came on two goals by #14 Mazon and one by #6 Bertolacci. The Magic was paced by a strong defensive effort from #9 Andruss and #2 Torres that kept the ball out of their zone for much of the day. Captains today were #12 Rypka and #3 Orellana. Next week the 2-2 Magic are home for a contest against a traditionally strong Scarsdale team.
U9 Boys – Sentinels
A decisive win by the Sentinels! Great passing and communications by the team was shown to be quite successful on this Silent Sunday, where coaches and parents keep their comments and suggestions to a minimum. Both teams played very well.
U9 Boys – Warriors
A continued challenging environment is meeting the Warriors in their division move from Silver to Gold this spring as they fell 3-1 in an away game at Rye Galaxy. Themes from prior games persist; meeting talented players who have taken positioning and passing to a higher level.
The Warriors are continuing to improve and learn while upping their skill level. We saw some improved passing and some great passes into space that resulted in great runs to net and McCarthy gaining one back for the Warriors. Next up is another challenge as we host West Side Red Bulls at WI upper on Sunday.
U10 Girls – Red Angels
The Red Angels had a bye last weekend and will play at North Salem on May 10th against the North Salem Valiants at 2:30.
U10 Boys – Legends
The Legends faced Mamaroneck at WI having tied them 2-2 in the fall. The first half was back and forth with the turning point being a diving penalty save from Rodriguez. Shortly after Kyan whipped in a dipping free kick and with Brandon challenging for the ball it bounced past the keeper for a 1-0 half time lead. Evidentially the half time talk was quite effective as the boys scored 5 without reply in the 2nd half. Kenneth found Julian for the 2nd who finished in the top corner. Then Julian chipped a through ball to Kyan who controlled pushed to his right and hammered it low past the keeper. Sweeper Nikhil continually dispossessed Mamaroneck’s dangerous striker by retreating, retreating and waiting for the famous “WI bounce”! Rodriguez showed the benefits of defending in the opponent’s penalty area by winning a tackle and finishing high into the net; then Kieran did likewise, feeding Max who crossed for Javier to finish smartly in the corner. Clouds of dust obscured the goalmouth scramble for goal number 6 which probably went in off a Mamaroneck player off a Max cross. We’re looking forward to Rye Brook at home next week.
U11 Girls – Strikers
This weekend the Strikers played the Greenburgh United Lightning at Losee Park. The visitors opened up the scoring with a first half goal. That started a reaction in the Strikers as they started attacking and gaining more possession of the ball. The Lightning stood up the pressure and kept the score line at 1-0 going into the half. In the second half the Strikers continued to dominate ball possession, bringing the game to the visitors. About 10 minutes into the second half the Strikers tied up the game with great shots by Juliana. This goal got the team even more excited, and they were looking for the go ahead goal. The Strikers continued to press and got off many shots, calling into action the Lightning’s goalkeeper. Finally with less than two minutes left the Strikers got the goal that they worked so hard for. The cross came in from Juliana to Shennah where she slotted a well-placed goal past the keeper. Unfortunately, with less than a minute left the visitors dribbled down the touch line crossed the ball into the penalty area to a lone striker who tucked the ball in past the disappointed goalkeeper. Ending the game in a 2-2 tie. Next week the Strikers take on the first place, Briarcliff Blasts, 12:00 at Losee Park.
U11 Boys – Tornadoes
The Tornadoes battled the visiting Edgemont Cyclones to a 3-3 tie on Sunday at Losee. After going down 0-1 in the first half, Gallagher equalized with a sly assist from Saquipay. Saquipay then put the Tornadoes up 2-1; following up a deflection with a predatory instinct that would make his number/namesake CR7 proud. In the second half Monteforte scored on a brilliant breakaway run and lightning shot to the corner; but the Cyclones answered twice. Although the Tornadoes kept the ball in the attacking third for the last 12 minutes, they were unable to find the net again. Ricciuti led the defense from goal with multiple spectacular saves, including a “robbery punch” over the crossbar that left Cyclones parents gasping. The Tornadoes hit the road next week to face the RUFC Jaguars in Ardsley.
U12 Girls – Mustangs
The Mustangs rebounded from a tough Pleasantville loss and earned their first win in division 2 against Rye. Julia Costa assisted by Emma Clarke and Britany Alban scored first, and Maya Weitzen, assisted by Talia Fante scored second. The lone goal scored on the Mustang defense was off a free kick. The Mustangs look to notch another win against North Salem on Sunday. Team tryouts for the 2015-2016 season are this Saturday at Washington Irving from 11:30-1:00. Coach Sutherland’s Mustangs look to expand their roster.
U13 Girls – Horsemen
The Horsemen played at Washington Irving and came away with a 0-0 draw against the Manhattan Fire.
The Horsemen had possession and carried the play to the Fire for most of the afternoon but were denied by a stout Fire defense. Excellent build-up play from the Horsemen midfield, notably Lis and Cowles led to the best scoring chances of the match. On both occasions, holding midfielder Avery Schumacher beat the Fire goalie only to have her long-range efforts turned away by a post and a crossbar.
The lone Fire attack was thwarted by a fine save by goalie Stewart.
The game became a back-and-forth affair in the second half with several near-misses from Horsemen forwards Horecky and Zednik. The best chance to break the deadlock came from a direct kick 25 yards from the Fire goal, but again Schumacher’s effort was stopped — this time by a fine save from the Fire goaltender.
The Horsemen (1-0-2) will be back in action on Sunday, May 17th against the Mt. Pleasant Wildcats at 2:30pm on Hackley School’s South Field.
U13 Boys – Tornadoes
The Manhattan Rowdies visited the Tornadoes and went home with a well-deserved 3-3 tie. The Rowdies went up 2-0 in the first 20 minutes. Fairley made an excellent diving save to push the ball around the right post off a hard Rowdies shot in the 25th minute. The Tornadoes started their rally as Marquecho scored with a hard shot from the right side in the 30th minute off a nice set-up by Ethan Fox. Geisker had an excellent run down the right side at the end of the first half and made a well-placed cross just out of the reach of the Tornadoes strikers. The Tornadoes reorganized at half time and came out with the tying goal by DJ Cronin off a goal kick when DJ lifted the shot over the Rowdie keeper in the 41st minute. Michael Richards had a nice opportunity for the go-ahead-goal off some nice work by Weltig on the left side but the ball sailed just inches over the crossbar. With 8 minutes to play Marquecho took a pass from DJ Cronin on the right side and placed it just inside the right post out of the reach of the outstretched Rowdies keeper for his second of the afternoon. The Rowdies continued to push and with no time on the clock scored off a corner to the left side of the Tornadoes goal. De Oliveira played well at the striker in the 2nd half and Orellano controlled the midfield. The backs Batheja, Villa, Compuzano and Cioffi played well to thwart many creative attacks. What seemed like a disappointing end of the game tie with the only other undefeated team in Division 4 was in reality an excellent result against a talented Manhattan club.
The Tornadoes will travel to Rye Brook Sunday May 10th.
U14 Girls – Eagles
The Eagles traveled to Pier 40 in Manhattan to play the DUSC Strikers this past Sunday. Although it was a beautiful day to be in the Big Apple, the Eagles defense started off flat, allowing the Strikers to be first to the ball in front of the goal. This less than aggressive play resulted in two early goals for DUSC in the first half. The Eagles offense, led by Allen came back late in the first half. Friedman fed Allen on a cross in front of the Strikers goalkeeper. Allen out maneuvered the keeper and netted the Eagles first goal. The second half started with a collision that resulted in what was later determined to be a fractured toe for the Eagles keeper, Jeris. Jeris, knowing she was the only available goalkeeper, stayed in the game, playing through obvious pain. The Strikers took advantage of the situation, scoring two more goals in the second half. The Eagles offense kept at it and scored a second goal when Allen took the ball down the field on a breakaway and found the back of the net. With this 2-4 loss, the Eagles continue to struggle to find their stride this season. Next Sunday, the Eagles travel to Randall’s Island to face the Manhattan Pumas.
