Sleepy Hollow Football Club Week 6

1) Strikers prepare to play 2) Mustangs move into first place

It was a cold windy day for the teams of the Sleepy Hollow Football Club last Sunday. There were rematches, defensive stands, offensive explosions, field pulls, an intra-club match, and teams playing without a full squad due to injury. Overall the club rebounded from its first losing weekend with 9 wins, 5 losses, and a tie. Below are the game reports provided by club volunteers.

2008 Girls Red Comets

Improved to 4-1-1 with a 5-0 home win against Greenburg, their third straight shutout. Abigail Church led scoring with two goals, the first, an impressive goal to goal sprint down the right side of the field outrunning her team mates and the whole Greenburg team. Jhoselyn Pugo, Samantha Mendieta and Libby Block each notched a goal. Noted their coach, Joe Block, “the girls all contributed to a strong showing”. Next week, the team plays a re-match against Mt Kisco who handed the Red Comets their only loss of the season.

2008 Boys River Sharks

Bounced back and posted another W on their home field. After a slow start the River Sharks plugged the mid-field hole that plagued them the week before. Josh Ortiz and Jack Uyaguari used position and speed-to-the-ball to dominate midfield. Henry Warden and Luca Dominguez provided a wall of defense. Brandon Quituisaca, Alessandro Soto and Pablo Quezado were solid in goal only letting in one. The offense peppered the opposing keeper with 17 shots on goal. Goals were scored by Josh Ortiz, who posted a hat trick, Eoghan Glynn, Dhary Sugui and Brandon Quituisaca resulting in a 6 -1 win for the River Sharks.

2007 Boys Dutchmen

And the 2007 Dynamo faced off in an intra-club game. Coach Scheller's Dynamo, although on average younger than the Dutchmen, came ready to play. There was impressive possession and passing by both teams and very solid defense all around. At the final whistle, the Dutchmen secured a 2-1 victory to keep their unbeaten streak alive and came away with much respect for the Dynamo who were some of their best competition so far this season.

Played the 2007 Boys Dutchmen. See above write-up.

2007 Girls Blaze

Met White Plains Black for a second time on Sunday for what was a competitive match. Both teams played strong throughout this windy game for a 4-0 finish for a Blaze win. Blaze, led by John Sutherland, scored early in the first half. Michayla Benuscak played well in the goal while the defense held strong. Karina Vizcaino, Julissa Casiano and Zoey Murphy, the blaze offense, pushed for several additional attempts on goal. Gemma Fante scored first with a nice assist by Gabby Disney. Blaze showed a lot of energy in the second half and Lizzy Molina demonstrated incredible control of the ball, scoring the second goal, assisted by Gemma Fante. Gemma Fante scored an additional two goals, including one in the final minutes of the game, securing her place as this week’s MVP. The Blaze defense and goalkeeping were outstanding. Blaze finished the game with a 4-0 win. Next game: Sunday, October 30 against Yonkers Rush Osprey.

2006 Girls Storm

Defeated the Mt. Pleasant Lady Warriors 2-0 to earn a win over a team they tied in week one. The Storm missed several goal opportunities early until midway through the 1st Half when co-captain Katie Andruss (#12) powered straight through the Warrior defense for her first goal of the season. Andruss was quick to note that her father, assistant coach Tom Andruss, was travelling and not there to see the goal! The score remained 1-0 at halftime and coaches Richardson and Lipping emphasized that the Storm squandered a 2-0 lead in their last game versus the Warriors. The Storm played aggressive soccer in the 2nd Half. Emily Orellana (#8) added a second goal. The Warriors kept attacking offensively, but they were often stopped by defensive efforts led by Emily Clayton (#2) at sweeper and co-captain Sadie Diaz (#7) at middle defense. Eva Bertiz (#4) played an excellent goalie with at least six saves in the half that she followed with kicks past midfield. The Storm are back home to play the Manhattan Comets at 1:30 p.m. this Sunday.

2006 Boys Warriors

Lost 1-3 to the third place John Jay shockwave. They face Pelham next.

2006 Boys Firebolts

Did not play Sunday because Hackley field was pulled due to rain.

2005 Boys Legends

Dominated possession on Sunday, hit the crossbar of a Nikhil Weltig shot, hit the post off a Hernan Quinde scoop, and kept the opposing keepers hand quite toasty on a windy day in Larchmont, but couldn't get the ball over the line. They lost 1-0 to a nice breakaway goal from Larchmont, but gave tremendous effort; coach Herb will have plenty to work on at practice.

2005 Girls Cyclones

Did not play Sunday because Hackley field was pulled due to rain.

2004 Boys Argentina

Played with 8 players in the 1st half and 7 in the 2nd half. The match was close until the middle of the 2nd half as exhaustion set in. The final score was 1-7. The players gave their all despite the hostile atmosphere. Credit to FC Somers for fielding 21 players. They deserved the victory. Special thanks to those that showed up on a cold, blustery day.

2004 Boys River Titans

Coached by Scott Burnett, Pepe Monteforte and Dan Black played Larchmont Sunday. The score was 5-1 Titans! The action started quickly with Oli Monteforte racing to the ball on Larchmont’s back line ... keeping the ball in play and passing to Zach Burnett who assisted Brandon Morocho scoring the first goal. Next Maximos Matailo made a great pass to Brandon who set up Jason Duque for the score. The third goal was all Jason, who pushed hard and finished strong with his 2nd goal. Oli kicked a shot of a lifetime, off a deflection from his own corner kick ... right back to him… he booted the ball into the net (bending it like Beckham ). The next goal was a joint effort, lead by a shot from Julian Bermeo to Kyan Aguilera, who passed to Zach, who scored. A well deserved shout out to all of the team. Thomas, Carlo, Andreas, Javie, Jeff, Sean, and Henry all had a great game .

2004 Girls Hurricane

Beat the Rye Brook Angels 4-1 on the road. With a win against Harrison Sunay, the the Hurricane will climb in the standings.

2003 Girls Strikers

Traveled down to Randall's Island for a late afternoon game. The girls played a strong defensive game, not giving their opponents the South Bronx Utd Soaring Stars many goal scoring opportunities. Importantly not giving up a goal! Both teams had strong goalkeepers taking control of their areas. The Strikers pressed hard to find the opening goal. Unfortunately they couldn't "find the back of the net". This Sunday the Strikers travel to Rye to take on third place Corinthians. A win would have a direct impact in their placing in division.

2002 Girls Mustangs

Had their best weekend of the season. On Saturday they took on the first place undefeated Briarcliff Burn and came away with a 1-0 victory. Briarcliff featured several premier players on defense that thwarted dribbling attacks by the Mustang forwards. If the Mustangs tried through-balls, the forward playing Briarcliff keeper would scoop them up before the Mustang Strikers could arrive. Several offside traps were perfectly executed by a defense that only allowed 3 goals all season. The Mustangs finally found success off a cross that landed 6 yards in front of the Briarcliff goal at Lily Rodriguez’s feet. The Burn girls defended well and challenged the shot from Lily. The ball ricocheted to the left and 7th grader Abigail Oppenheim sent a shock wave through the 9th grade league by placing the ball past the Burn keeper for the deciding goal.

On Sunday the Mustangs faced a decent Greenburg team. Greenburg placed their best player on defense in hopes of slowing the Mustang attack. The Mustangs were slowed but still managed to score two goals before half. In the second half Greenburg moved their star player to offense and the Mustangs capitalized with 4 goals that seemed like 5. The Mustangs won 6-0 and took control of first place in the top division of the Westchester Youth Soccer League. Talia Fante and Juliana Largess each scored two goals, Maddy Navin and Britany Alban had one each, Britany had 2 assists as well, and Abigail and Julia Costa had one assist each. The defense of Annie Dineen, Sophie Sylves-Berry, Samantha Livingston, Grace Ryan, Emma Clarke, and keeper Julia Costa held the second and fourth rated offenses in the league scoreless earning their 4th and 5th shutouts for the year. The Mustangs now have the league leading offense scoring 26 goals, ten more than the next team. The Mustangs next take on Mahopac and are on pace for a league championship.

2002 Boys Los Gauchos

Have been decimated by injuries and absences this season. They had 8 players for a match against a much bigger and stronger JV team in Yonkers under very cold and windy conditions, 11 players did not attend. Final score was 2-5 and the match was not decided until the final 10 minutes. Yonkers had a full roster of 20 players in attendance. Great credit goes to them for their dedicated players. They deserved the hard-fought victory. Los Gauchos captain Russell Gomory and guest u12 player Kyle Eddington earned Men of the Match honors, both put on an amazing display. Russell's injuries have caught up to him and he will be resting the rest of the season. Special mentions go to Jack Taylor, Paul Julian and Dylan Smith for their outstanding play as well.

2001 Boys Tornados

The Tornadoes started the game with ten men and in fact played the first 60 minutes of the game down a man. It was truly and incredible effort to keep the first place undefeated Fire scoreless through the first 50 minutes. AJ Casiano made a number of spectacular saves stopping two clear breakaways and through a spirited and structured defensive effort by Michael Richards, Aaron Andrade, Bruce Villa, DJ Cronin and Carlos Suqui the Tornadoes were able to hold the fire off until a quick break with 20 minutes to play. At 11 a side after the Fire goal, the Tornadoes held possession and the bulk of the play. DJ Cronin moved up to striker with 5 minutes to play and was fed a nice through ball from Diego Zhisphon to knot the game at 1-1. Up until this game the Fire had won all of their games and only been scored on once. A very gutsy effort by the Tornadoes. The Tornadoes’ next game is Saturday November 5th against the Pelham Eagles at Washington Irving field.
