Sleepy Hollow Football Club Week 7

1 Strikers pose after big win. 2 Sleepy Hollow Modified wins school league. 3 Legends honored at Halloween parade for National Games.

Week seven was met with difficult weather conditions affecting many games. Heavy rain forced 2 games to be cancelled and many were played in poor conditions. Overall the local kids held up well winning 9 games, losing 4 and tying 2. The club is also noticing success on the school level with the combined 7th and 8th grade Sleepy Hollow Middle School modified girls team winning their league for the second time in 3 years. On this years championship team, 10 out of 11 starters currently play for the Sleepy Hollow Football Club (SHFC). The school Modified, Junior Varsity, and Varsity soccer coaches have noticed an improvement in play from the new players the club is producing. In addition several boys were honored at the Halloween parade for their participation in the AYSO National Games in Florida. Enjoy the below game reports provided by SHFC volunteers.

2008 Girls Red Comets

It was quite a win for the Red Comets this past Sunday. They played Mt Kisco in a rematch of their only loss of the season. The Red Comets played great defense in the first half. No matter what they tried, Mt Kisco was hampered by all around good defense by Mia Martinez, Greta Wuerffel and by sweeper Corina Armster who roped in any attempt by Mt Kisco to mount an offensive shot in the first half. Thanks to their effort, goal keeper Libby Block never touched the ball in the first half. The half ended 0-0 as the Red Comets could not break through on offense despite numerous shots on goal. The second half started with the Red Comets caught off guard on a goal kick and Mt Kisco scoring an opportunistic goal to go up 1-0. Soon after, Abbie Church took matters into her own hands and for the second time in two weeks took the ball on defense, sped down the whole field and then finished with a nice crossing move delivering a goal to even the score. The Red Comets, rejuvenated by her effort, kept the pressure up. They came so close minutes later on a shot by Armster that hit the goal post, ricocheted back in front of the goal and Samantha Marvin shot the rebound back only to be denied by the Mt. Kisco goalie. With time running out and a tie seeming to be the likely outcome, Libby Block got the ball at midfield and dribbled down the left side. She cleared the ball to the center and Corina Armster drilled it in for the winning goal. Moments later the skies opened up with a drenching rain and hail storm that ended the game with everyone running for cover. The Red Comets with the win put themselves in contention for first place in their division with three games to go.

2008 Boys River Sharks

Were pelted with rain and soaked to the bone during their pre-game warm up. But proving that they are Soccer warriors, they practiced in the barrage of rain until the weather cleared just enough to start the game. They played hard in tough conditions, splashing through the mud puddles, weighted by their wet uniforms and slushy cleats. With several shots on goal by both teams, the River Sharks fought to hold the game to a 0 - 0 tie until the rain came down again. With the first sound of thunder the game was called about 18 minutes in and the game was deemed incomplete.

2007 Boys Dutchmen

Improved to 7-0 with a 3-1 win over the RUFC Wolves. The game had a 3:00 start and there was a torrential downpour during the first half. The boys were undeterred and fought through the elements and the determined Wolves to victory. The boys are playing unselfish soccer with lots of skillful passing and the defense and goalkeeping remains stout.

2007 Boys Dynamo

This past Sunday the Rivertowns United Dynamo visited a skilled and speedy opponent in Munay Ossining at Ann Dorner Middle School. The Dynamo held strong throughout the first half, with solid defensive play from Carlos Almonte, Raul Socualaya and Edwin Dutan, and held Ossining to a 0-0 score into the second half. Nonetheless Ossining was able to punch through for three goals toward the end of the game, handing the Dynamo a 3-0 loss. Game ball -- hands down -- goes to Dynamo goalkeeper, Pierce Davis, who had the single best performance of any Dynamo player all season. Pierce played an absolutely outstanding game in goal, repeatedly thwarting the Ossining offense. Thanks also to parent, Eric Davis, for helping out with warming the boys up and providing game insight. The Dynamo head to Dows Lane this Sunday to face the Greenburg Mustangs.

2007 Girls Blaze

Rained out 20 minutes in. Have a good week.

2006 Girls Storm

Swept past the Manhattan Comets by the score 5-0 for their third consecutive victory. In ideal soccer conditions at Hackley School, the home team Storm sprinted out to a fast start behind goals by co-captain #2 Emily Clayton and #14 Anastasia Mazon. The Storm played a dominant first half with 10 shots on goal by five different players, and after a blast by #3 Emily Orellana the game entered halftime with a 3-0 Storm lead. In the second half, the Storm continued their relentless offensive push with another 10 shots and scores by #16 Elsa Block and #5 Ashley Richardson. Defensive play was paramount as the Storm back line of #12 Katie Andruss, #15 Samantha Fajardo and Elsa Block held the opponents without a shot on goal until the very end of the game. Next week the Storm travel to Yonkers to oppose the Quickstrike Patriots Rush in a rematch of an early season tie. The Storm have a record of 4-1-2 (W-L-T) and are coached by Kevin Richardson, Thomas Lipping and Tom Andruss.

2006 Boys Warriors

lost 1-6 to first place Pelham at Hackley field. It doesn’t get much easier as they next face the 2nd place West Side Redbulls at home Sunday.

2006 Boys Firebolts

suffered their fist loss 2-3 to the Just Play Soccer Rage. They were robbed an attempt at a comeback when the game ended early in the second half because of rain. Despite the loss the Firebolts are two wins away from clinching the division championship.

2005 Boys Legends

Coaches O’Sullivan, Weltig and Weitzen were delighted with the boys’ performances on the weekend, winning 2 games, 6-0 against Yonkers on Saturday and 7-1 away to Port Chester on Sunday, and displaying admirable behavior, “owning” their mistakes and helping injured teammates. The first game started with Adrian clearing up-field to Hernan who controlled and passed laterally back to a sprinting Adrian; he popped it back to Hernan in the middle who promptly switched field to the left side, playing in a rampaging Justin; Justin then pulled back to Nikhil – waiting in the hole – who swept it low into the far corner. It continued like that for the week-end – smart 1-2’s, defenders flying past on overlaps, tenacious defending (especially by Kenneth, Kalle and Luke), super goalkeeping from new keeper Tito, and fine finishing – over and wide of the keepers. The scoring tally for the weekend was 5 goals for Justin, 4 for Nikhil, 3 for Hernan and 1 for Kieran.

2005 Girls Cyclones

Coached by Mike Levine, Nick Tsilibes and Tracey Koch tied the Yorktown Red Stars 0-0 in a very competitive game. The passing, teamwork and commitment by all Cyclones was terrific, as the two teams were very evenly matched. The team next plays on November 6th at Hackley against the West Side Red Bull's.

2004 Boys Argentina

Lost a tough match against visiting Mahopac. The team was able to field 12 players. Argentina had numerous opportunities to score and could not capitalize. The entire match was played under a driving rainstorm. Argentina played without substitutes the 2nd half. Final score was 3-4 against a stronger opponent. Argentina will finish the season with two upcoming away matches.

2004 Boys River Titans

Played away against Mamaroneck Sunday. The spirited contest ended in a 1-1 tie, with the Titans goal scored
by Oliver Monteforte off a pass from Zach Burnett. The River Titans remain undefeated .

2004 Girls Hurricane

Defeated the Ryebrook angels 4-1. They hope to continue to climb in the standings when they next face New Rochelle.

2003 Girls Strikers

The Strikers had a great game against 3rd place team Rye Corinthians. Coaches Matt and Arjen with the captains Alicia and Melanie lead the team to a well earned 4-1 win. First half didn't have either team pressing hard, the teams seemed to be feeling each other out. The 2nd half opened up with the home team Rye opening the scoring with a lucky toe poking of the ball under the oncoming diving goalkeeper Alicia. The goal got the Strikers hungry for their own goal. They started right from the kickoff restart to move the ball up field. Emma S-M. got past her defender on the right flank sending a strong cross that a defender sent into their own net. That goal set off a series of three more goals 2 for Melanie (One goal she really put her body on the line by blocking the clearing kick from the goalkeeper and setting herself up for an easy finish!) and one lobbing shot over the head of the oncoming keeper for Emma C. The defense lead by Grace and Muriel, along with keepers Alicia & Ajsa held strong not letting many more goal scoring opportunities for the home team. Next week the Strikers are back home at Washington Irving lower field against Larchmont Thunderbolts @ 2:45 PM.

2002 Girls Mustangs

Faced a tough Mahopac team that wanted to knock them out of first place. The Mustang passing game was too much for Mahopac to handle in the first half but the Mustang girls missed on many scoring opportunities. The girls eventually broke through with an all-7th grade scoring combination of Juliana Largess to Abigail Oppenheim. Toward the end of the half, star midfielder Britany Alban asked for a rest, but before the coach could pull her a penalty kick was awarded to the Mustangs. Luckily Britany was still in the game as she calmly converted for a 2-0 half time lead. While the girls were being lectured at halftime about missed opportunities and the need to put other teams away early, sudden wind and cold driving rain arrived an hour before forecasted. The girls now had to face the bigger Mahopac team against the wind with a slow muddy field. The Mustang passing advantage was neutralized and Mahopac sensed an upset. Soon a wet ball from an errant shot slipped off of keeper Julia Costa’s hand giving the Arrows a corner kick. The Mustangs defended well but failed to clear giving Mahopac another chance that succeeded. Holding on to a 2-1 lead the Mustangs played tough and fought momentum. Two more nerve wracking corner kicks were defended. The game ended with Mahopac taking a direct kick from 30 yards out. The Mustang defense pushed up forcing the Arrows to stay on side and the kick was easily defended as time expired. The Mustangs next face underdog Scarsdale before their end of the season showdown with White Plains. The Mustangs need to win out to be league champs.

2002 Boys Los Gauchos

Traveled to Goldens Bridge to play John Jay. The day was hot and humid and the field was very small and bumpy... Los Gauchos dominated from beginning to end, lead 3-0 at halftime, and finished with a 6-0 win. There were 35 shots on goal. John Jay managed 1 shot on goal against a very aggressive Gauchos squad. Los Gauchos borrowed younger players from SHFC Argentina to compensate for the many injured players. Having substitutes helped the team play at a high tempo and press constantly the opponent. Gauchos completed over 300 passes in very tight spaces. Guest players contributed to team's quality passing and control of the match. Jhonatan Yunga and Paul Julian earned Men of the Match honors for their complete play. Paul played in 5 positions, Jhonatan in 3. Two of the goals were scored by headers courtesy of Ethan Thornell and Franklin Pena.
