Sleepy Hollow Football Club Week 8

1) Warriors practice under the lights at Losee. 2) Legends get game plan from coach Fergus.

It was another great week of soccer for our local club. More than half of the 17 teams are still in the hunt for a division championships with the season ending next week for several of them. This week featured 11 wins, 3 losses, and 2 ties. Below are the game reports provided by the volunteers.

2008 Girls Red Comets

Four game win streak came to an end Sunday in a 2-0 loss to the Pelham Gazelles. In their first meeting a month ago, the teams fought to a tie, but this time around, the Gazelles played more aggressively and were able to control the ball more than the Comets scoring a goal in each half. The Comets did put in a great effort and fought to the end coming close to scoring a couple of times as play expired. Jhoselyn Pugo in particular had a strong game for the Comets often aggressively taking the ball from the Gazelles and making nice plays to get the ball up-field. The Red Comets at 5-2-1 look forward to a chance to get back on track next week at home against Chappaqua.

2008 Boys River Sharks

The River Sharks dug in to deliver another W last Sunday against the undefeated Mt. Pleasant Mayhem. Anchored by the inspired back line fortress of Henry Warden and Luca Dominguez the River Sharks found their positions and executed a few key passing plays to penetrate the strong defense and goal tending of the opposing Mayhem. Following a well placed assist by Eoghan Glynn, Dhary Sugui put the first goal in the net. Josh Ortiz was taken down on a breakaway and was awarded a penalty shot which he placed with precision for goal number 2. Jack Uyaguari kicked a long pop fly which sailed over the heads of the defense and crested just high enough to allude the hands of the goal tender for number 3. Alessandro Soto, Pablo Quezada and Brandon Quituisaca consistently fought for the ball in mid-field and pushed the offensive line forward. Thaddeus Kromelis fought to deflect two powerful shots as goal tender in the second half. Keaton Greenberg powered down the field in the last minute interrupting a breakaway to defend the shut-out.

2007 Boys Dutchmen

Faced off against the Rye Predators at home and secured a 6-0 victory. The boys came out aggressively and found the back of the net four times in the first half. The Dutchmen slowed the tempo in the second half and played a strong possession game while maintaining their shape on the field and evading the pressing Predators. Rye gamely challenged throughout and never gave up. The Dutchmen play Pelham next week for their last game of the regular season.

2007 Boys Dynamo

On a cold and blustery late-afternoon game, the visiting Dynamo scored a season-high five goals in their 5-0 win over the Greenburgh Mustangs. The Dynamo applied immediate pressure and maintained strong possession through the game. Henry Scheller and Jack McCarthy netted goals for the Dynamo in the first half, while Carlos Almonte, Edwin Dutan and Raul Socualaya along the back line consistently kept the ball in Mustang territory. Jack McCarthy and Edwin Dutan scored in the second half on solid strikes from distance, while Carlos Almonte moving up to the right halfback position had a nice run at the defense in the box and poked one home from several yards out. The Dynamo travel to Port Chester this Sunday to face the Port Chester Dragons for their final game of the fall season.

2007 Girls Blaze

Met White Plains Black for a second and final time this season. From the first whistle, the Blaze girls were all in and ready to win. Early on, the team hustled with a strong defense, including a blocked shot on goal by Emily Aridas, consistently huge down field kicks by both Gabby Disney and Kayla McGuigan. Offensively, Lizzy Molina, Michayla Benuscak and Gemma Fante showed a lot of hustle and great control of the ball, moving the play down field several times. After a couple unsuccessful Blaze attempts on goal, Julianna Marvin placed the first goal, and the parents let out a collective exhale. Things moved quickly after the first goal, and the Blaze scored three more goals moving into the second half: Gemma Fante (assist Lizzy Molina), Julissa Casiano (assist Gemma Fante), andLizzy Molina (assist Gabby Disney). Karina Vizcaino (so speedy down the sideline!) andMeghan O’Hanlon continued to push and partnered with Zoey Murphy to keep the pressure on the team and keep the Red Storm at bay. Blaze scored two final goals by Julissa Casiano (assist Zoey Murphy) and a clean, final goal by Zoey Murphy. In summary, the Blaze teamwork and commitment were evident as they defeated the Red Storm for a 6-0 decisive finish. Next up: The Blaze, coached by John Sutherland and Howard Allen, take on DUSC Blue at the Pier 40 Rooftop in the city on Sunday.

2006 Girls Storm

Fell to the Quickstrike Patriots by the score 0-1. In a meeting of the two league leaders, the Storm fought hard but ultimately lost a close one to the first place Patriots. Co-captains #15 Samantha Fajardo and #3 Emily Orellana led the charge in a first half that saw both squads stymie the opposing offense. Goalkeeper #9 Siiri Lipping also made a number of clutch saves to ensure a scoreless match at the half. In the second half, the Storm's strategy aimed to produce a breakaway by the speedy #11 Talia Lieberman, but the Patriot defense managed to disrupt all attempts. The Patriots knocked in the game's lone score during a bit of a scrum right in front of the Storm goal. Despite a few late pushes by Orellana and #4 Ava Bertiz, the Storm were not able to find the back of the net. Next week the Storm host Rye Brook at 3pm. The Storm have a record of 4-2-2 (W-L-T) and are coached by Kevin Richardson, Thomas Lipping and Tom Andruss.

Argentina played very well and dominated possession throughout the match. Pelham scored on two opportunities. Final match of the season will be away at Rye next Sunday. Argentina has played with great heart and sportsmanship throughout the season and currently lead in sportsmanship points despite a disappointing 1-6-1 record.

With a win the girls will earn their third division title and first league title. With a loss or tie, they will finish in either second or third place for the season.

2002 Boys Los Gauchos

Won a resounding victory against rival Yorktown. Having faced each other in wysl and multiple tournaments the teams know each other well. The matches have always been very tight and low scoring.. Credit to Gauchos evolution as a team and improvement in play and it showed on the pitch. A 7-1 victory which was decided in the 1st 15 minutes.... Man of the Match honors to Mateo Lewis and Jack Taylor who had outstanding games including the play and goal of the year.... the combination started from the Gauchos Penalty area and lead to a Mateo perfect lead pass to bypass 5 defenders and releasing Jack who scored a wonderful across-the-grain goal beating the opposing goalkeeper on a perfect low shot to the corner. Los Gauchos had 13 players in attendance and a guest player, Peter, from the younger SHFC Argentina team. The team has played short-handed all year due to injuries. Goals from Paul, Franklin, Ryan and Jack. Mateo provided most of the assists. Los Gauchos had over 20 shots on goal. Defensive was solid with the sole exception of one play. Opponent's only goal was a careless giveaway by our center back. Next Sunday Los Gauchos host FC Somers to decide 2nd place in the division.
