The SHFC Magic fell to the Scarsdale Blue Santos 7-1, in a game that showed how sometimes the score does not accurately reflect the competitiveness of play. Led by co-captains #10 Nicolette Cioffi and #17 Caitlyn O’Hanlon the Magic put up a good effort and demonstrated sound soccer skills. In the middle of the first half Scarsdale went up 1-nil and seemed poised to control the pace of the game, but the Magic answered quickly with a goal by #5 Emily Rypka. However, despite tenacious goalkeeping by #4 Christine Kern, and a gutty second-half keeper performance by Katie Andruss who stopped shot after shot, the strong Scarsdale offensive attack was relentless. The Magic did not show any letdown and kept the pressure on Scarsdale’s defense led by strikers #14 Anastasia Mazon, #11 Talia Lieberman and #8 Sophia McLaurin. In a back and forth game, defensive play by #6 Shea Bertolacci, #3 Emily Orellana and #12 Natalie Rypka were able to control most of the Scarsdale offensive advances. With a final spring record of 3 wins against 6 losses (and an overall record of 10 wins and 9 losses) the Magic wrapped up a successful first year in the RUFC’s upper 2 divisions.
U9 Boys – Sentinels
The last game of the season was won handily with a final score of 3-0. At halftime, the score was 1-0. The Sentinels pulled off two additional goals in the second half.
U10 Girls – Red Angels
On Sunday, the Red Angels capped off a successful season with a 4-2 victory against the North Salem Valiants. The Red Angels went up 3-0, gave up two second half goals, and was able to seal the victory with a 4th goal in the closing minutes. Thalia Tsilibes, this week’s captain scored 2 goals, with Angie Santos and Emma Behrens adding another goal each.
The Red Angels ended the Spring Season with a 7-1 record, showing improvement week to week.
The Red Angels also ran in the community 5k Color run as a team and enjoyed the experience and showed off their commitment to training for the season.
U11 Girls – Strikers
The U11G Strikers had the week off but were anxiously awaiting the results of a make-up game to determine the division standings. The Strikers finished the spring season as division champions! Coaches and players are very pleased with how the year has gone. The Strikers will take off the month of July for rest then back to summer training in August.
U12 Girls – Mustangs
The under age 12 Mustangs finished their spring season losing 2-4 to North Salem. The Mustangs took the lead early but faded in the heat. Maddy Navin and Julia Costa scored both goals off a direct and indirect kick. Although the team didn’t fare as well in Division 2 as they had hoped, they take pride in winning the sportsmanship award for the division. The Mustangs then took to the Crest for a pool party to celebrate the year. The Mustangs played in a remarkable 51 games in the past year and finished with a winning record. They participated in 5 tournaments (one in California) and won 2. They had over 100 practices and significantly developed as players and as a team. The young ladies are looking forward to summer practices, camps, and hitting the field next season.
U13 Boys – Tornadoes
The Tornadoes had a very successful spring season finishing in second place in Division 4 with a record of 6-3-1. The Tornadoes transitioned to a more offensive style in the spring which paid off, scoring a whopping 33 goals in 10 games. All of the boys developed their individual and team skills tremendously and the coaches and parents are all very proud of how they battled hard and worked every game. We look forward to the fall season as U14s!
