Sleepy Hollow Obtains Permits for New Reservoir

The village has gotten the necessary permits from Mount Pleasant to create a second reservoir and will break ground this summer on the $4.5 million project this summer, Mayor Ken Wray said in a March 12 letter to residents.

That's not as soon as officials had hoped when they announced the deal last summer, but it's essential before any development can go forward in Sleepy Hollow.

"The Village was not storing nearly enough water in its reservoir – located in the Rockefeller State Park Preserve – to meet NY State’s requirement of a 24-hour supply," Wray reminded residents. "We don't have anything close to that requirement now. In fact, we are usually at or below the 50% level."

The additional reservoir, with double the capacity of the village's current water storage, will be off Lake Road. The village needs the 2.4 million gallon capacity both will bring.

The new reservoir will be a buried tank on National Trust land. The Rockefellers have granted the village a 99-year easement. Only about one foot of the tank will come above ground, which will be covered with landscaping and native species.
