Sleepy Hollow Police Beating: Couple Awarded $1 Million

The incident occurred in 2008, and the case has wound its way through the courts ever since.

Mario Gomez and his ex-wife Awilda Gomez were awarded $1.05 million by a federal court in connection with a police brutality case where a former Sleepy Hollow detective beat them during an altercation in 2008.

The Journal News reports that former SHPD Det. Jose Quinoy was found to have assaulted the couple when they argued over whether the married Quinoy was having an affair with the Gomez’s daughter, which Quinoy denied. Quinoy, now a Mount Vernon police officer, and the Gomez’s were neighbors, and the assault occurred at Sleepy Hollow Police Headquarters.

Quinoy’s tenure in Sleepy Hollow was checkered with allegations of improper conduct from unrelated incidents, for which he was acquitted.

“I went through complete hell for years and wish it never had happened,” Gomez told The Journal News. “We can close the book and move on with our lives and for that I will always be grateful for the jury’s decision.”
