Statewide Energy Coalition Urges License Renewal for Indian Point
The New York Affordable Reliable Energy Alliance spoke before the NRC's hearing on Indian Point.

TARRYTOWN, NY - In conjunction with the June 8 public meeting by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Indian Point, Arthur “Jerry” Kremer, chairman of the New York Affordable Reliable Electricity Alliance (New York AREA), which represents business groups, labor unions, community organizations, and independent energy experts, issued the following statement:
Indian Point is an extremely safe facility that is very important for New York’s economy and environment. It has been proven safe by thousands of hours of rigorous inspections and continuous monitoring from the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff. It is time to end the more than nine year protracted license renewal process and grant Indian Point a 20-year license renewal.
New York is a safer, cleaner place because of Indian Point. Without this virtually zero-carbon emitting facility, which provides 25 percent of the region’s electricity, we would need more fossil fuel generation that would degrade our region’s already poor air quality. Furthermore, there is absolutely no way New York State will meet its ambitious greenhouse gas emissions goals if Indian Point is closed.
Residents of the Lower Hudson Valley and from across the state strongly support Indian Point’s continued operation. Indian Point’s license renewal is important for the region to be assured of having reliable, competitively-priced power for our economy and the environment.
