Students at Elmsford's Grady School Express Gratitude to Overseas Troops

Letters to the troops expressed their appreciation and acknowledgement of the troops' bravery

Students in several grades at the Alice E. Grady School in the Elmsford Union Free School District spent part of their time Sept. 11 remembering the tragic events of the day 16 years ago by writing letters to U.S. soldiers deployed overseas.

The project titled, “9/11 Serve+Remember Day of Service,” was initiated through a partnership with Volunteer New York!

Students were given a variety of hints and suggestions when writing their letters. Many were expected to talk about their appreciation for the troops’ service and dedication to the country, the bravery and courage it takes to fight, as well as the safety and security that their efforts bring to the country and its citizens.

In one letter, a student recalled that his mother, who worked in the World Trade Center, was due to work that day but had to bring her grandmother to the doctor instead, adding that she was glad her mom was not there that fateful day.

Others made comments like, “Thank you for protecting our country and keeping us safe,” “Thank you for your service. I feel safe when I’m in my country,” and “I am free because of you. Keep it going!”

The 280 letters that were written by the children have been added to care packages that are being sent to the troops through the efforts of United for Troops of Mahopac.

Grady Principal Doug Doller said students at Grady are ideally suited for such a project.

“Our Grady leaders are very community focused and care for others,” said Mr. Doller. “It is no surprise to me that they wrote such wonderful letters that are sure to be a welcome surprise to our troops overseas.”
