Students Explore Healthcare Careers at Sleepy Hollow High School

On Thursday, April 16, students at Sleepy Hollow High School stepped into the world of healthcare during Medical Career Day, hosted in partnership with Northwell Phelps Hospital.

The inaugural event was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, underscoring a shared commitment to expanding community partnerships and real-world learning.

Healthcare professionals across a wide range of fields led interactive stations where students explored career pathways and spoke directly with specialists, including those in nursing, orthopedics, neurology, nutrition, emergency medicine, surgical services, and respiratory care.

“This event is really helpful for anyone who wants to go into the medical field,” said sophomore Kaiden Savoy. “We learned about CPR in health class, but to see the nurses showing us how to do it on a CPR dummy is really cool. It’s something you can practice and learn how to save someone’s life.”

Throughout the day, students rotated through stations where they practiced tendon suturing, examined brain models, learned CPR techniques, explored wound treatment, and gained insight into patient care across a range of clinical settings.

For those beginning to think more seriously about their future, the experience offered a closer look at multiple pathways.

“I’m a junior in high school, so I’m starting to think about what I want to do as a career,” said Breanne Rodriguez. “It’s interesting to learn about all the different areas in healthcare. I like the hospital setting, so this is a great way to see what those jobs might look like in the real world.”

Students also received “passports” to be stamped at each station, encouraging them to visit every table and fully engage with each hospital representative. Those who completed the full rotation earned small giveaways, adding an extra layer of motivation throughout the event.

“We are grateful to our partners at Northwell Phelps Hospital for bringing this experience to our scholars,” said Superintendent Dr. Ray Sanchez. “Opportunities like this give students a chance to explore future pathways in a practical context, and we’re proud to launch this new event together.”

Medical Career Day reflects the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns’ ongoing commitment to connecting students with experiences that help them explore their interests and begin to see themselves in future roles, marking what the district hopes will be the first of many similar opportunities.
