Tarrytown Band Director Micah Sprague Receives Statewide Excellence Award

During the Sleepy Hollow Middle/High School spring concert on May 18, the focus briefly shifted from the music itself to the educator standing behind it.

Before an audience of students, families, colleagues, and community members, longtime Sleepy Hollow Middle-High School band director Micah Sprague was formally presented with the 2026 Richard H. Snook Outstanding Band Director Award by the New York State Band Directors’ Association (NYSBDA), one of the organization’s highest honors.

Named after the first president of NYSBDA, the award is presented annually to a single band director in New York State whose work reflects the organization’s founding principles of service, advancing standards, and expanding opportunities in music education.

For those who know Mr. Sprague’s work in the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns and throughout the region, the recognition felt both significant and deeply fitting.

“Micah’s impact extends far beyond the concert stage,” said Austin Day, Sleepy Hollow Middle/High School band teacher. “He has helped shape a culture where students feel seen, challenged, supported, and inspired through music. His dedication to students, to the craft of music education, and to this community is extraordinary. I couldn’t think of a more deserving recipient.”

Over the years, Mr. Sprague has become a familiar and respected presence not only within Tarrytown schools, but across the broader music education community. Through performances, mentorship, regional collaboration, and years of steady leadership, his work has helped create meaningful opportunities for young musicians while elevating the standard of music education for students throughout the region.

The presentation during the spring concert carried particular meaning, taking place in front of the students and families who have experienced that impact firsthand. As applause filled the auditorium, the moment reflected not only professional recognition, but the relationships, trust, and sense of belonging that music programs can help foster within a school community.
