TARRYTOWN, NY — The village of Tarrytown will be closing down portions of its public parks to get rid of an invasive species.

Village officials said, on Tuesday, the Tarrytown Riverwalk and portions of Pierson Park will be closed in segments as contractors work to remove the invasive species.

The entire Riverwalk will be treated from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Members of the public should avoid the park Tuesday because large swaths will be temporarily closed while the work is performed.

Contractors will be trying to remediate mugwort and vetch on the Riverwalk. They do not respond to traditional gardening techniques such as pulling or cutting, officials said, and are beginning to choke out native plantings and desirable plants including pollinator plants.

On the advice of landscape experts, the village engaged Weeds Inc. to do the remediation. The company will be applying clopyralid, a selective herbicide that controls these invasive plants.

Village officials said clopyralid is not harmful to bees and pollinators and is practically nontoxic to both fish and aquatic insects. It has a low toxicity to humans as well, mainly acting as a temporary and minor eye irritant.

Staff will be onsite for the duration of the work.

Weather conditions can affect the ability to perform the application of clopyralid.
