Then and Now: Lyndhurst Estate Gate Lodge

Traveling on Route 9 between Tarrytown and Irvington sits an antique building that has greeted visitors to the estate for almost 150 years.

The Lyndhurst Estate has a very storied past, with three prominent families privately owning the property since 1838 when the estate was originally built by Alexander Jackson Davis.

The focus of this article of Then and Now however is not on the grand estate that over looks the Hudson, but rather the proud gate lodge that sits on Route 9 at the east end of the property.

The gate lodge, which was constructed right after the Civil War, was completed in 1867 and while this mini building was far from its parent mansion, it has remained a prominent fixture of the entire property, greeting visitors as they arrive and leaving them with a lasting impression of the affluent estate they were leaving.

In the "Then and Now" picture, the bottom caption reads, "entrance to Helen Gould's residence."  Helen was the daughter of Jay Gould, the famous and often infamous railroad magnate and Wall Street tycoon, who used the residence as a summer retreat and to host parties on special occasions.

As we all marvel at the Gothic architecture of the Mansion house and its gleaming interior, let us also take a moment, the next time we are traveling on Route 9, or if we are visiting the estate, to also celebrate the other pieces of this mammoth property, one of which is the gate keeper himself, the Lyndhurst Estate Gate Lodge.
