There is Such Thing as Free Breakfast

Jennie-O Turkey thanked Sleepy Hollow for their hospitality with a free breakfast sandwich giveaway on Saturday.

There was a banner over Beekman about giving breakfast a "wake-up call." That was the theme of last week in various locations in Sleepy Hollow from lighthouse to Manor.

Then on Saturday, the meat product company really took over one part of town with a sandwich-giveaway operation in the lot across from Village Hall, on the sidewalks, and even...the street.

Dressed in Jennie-O shirts, hats, and even umbrellas for the bit when it was raining, company workers handed out paper bags with egg, cheese and turkey-meat sandwiches to drivers passing by the end of Beekman.

"You made my day," said one grateful driver. Some kept driving past, windows rolled up, but most made the stop for the hefty sandwiches.

Others on foot approached the green-and-white trucks parked in the municipal lot for their complimentary bottle of water and hot sandwich. The company was initially going to give away 1,000 sandwiches to the citizens, but upped the amount to 2,500 from 9 a.m. until it was more of a brunch than a breakfast hour.

John, owner of was only somewhat okay with the event and the dent in his business, commenting, "it's one day."

The whiteboard sign in the window however conveyed a slightly different sentiment: "Hot (real) sandwiches inside."
