Village Schools: Four Weeks Off in 2013-2014?

New school calendar eyes a two-week Yule break and "high-quality family time."

A tentative calendar for the school year starting in September calls for a full two-week break over the Christmas holidays as well as single weeks off in February and April.

If adopted, the calendar would return students from the Yule break on Jan. 6 instead of Jan. 2, the alternative date under consideration. Urging the later return, school board President B. Joseph Lillis called the holiday period “high-quality family time.”

The relative flexibility in next year’s calendar contrasts with recent tight-fit schedules. By law, local districts must map 180 school days within a firmly bookended calendar, working around shifting dates required for religious observances, administrative needs and other schedule demands.
