Washington Irving School Unveils New Athletic Field

Fourth grader Bella P. was among the first students to step onto the new athletic field at Washington Irving School this week, marking a moment that connected past and present in a significant way.

Nearly a decade earlier, Bella’s sister had the same experience when the previous field was first unveiled.

“It felt really good,” Bella said. “My sister got to step on the old field when it was new, and now I get that chance too. I’m excited to play with my friends, run, and play tag.”

The moment came as students joined Superintendent Dr. Ray Sanchez and Board of Education members for a ribbon cutting ceremony to officially unveil the new field. Also in attendance were the Tarrytown Chief of Police and Mayor, along with other community partners. Following the ceremony, students were invited onto the turf for a special gym class full of movement, energy, and excitement.

“This is when a vision becomes reality,” said Board of Education Vice President Krista Barron. “Things sometimes take a while, but it’s worthwhile. We appreciate the patience, trust, and support of our community in helping make this happen. We’re so excited for students to enjoy it, compete on it, and even gallop across it like Horsemen!”

Longtime Washington Irving physical education teacher Lara Vivolo, now in her 26th year, noted how the new field represents more than just an upgraded facility. It’s a shared space for the entire community.

“It brings the whole community together,” Ms. Vivolo said. “This isn’t just for Washington Irving… our middle school and high school use it, and so do many recreation programs. We even have adults playing here on the weekends. It’s about coming together for the love of play, sport, and movement.”

Ms. Vivolo also reflected on the moment students first stepped onto the field.

“It was really exciting to see them run onto the field for the first time,” she said. “There’s something special about having that kind of space—room to run, play, and just enjoy being active.”

“We’re grateful to our community, our staff, and everyone who helped make this possible," said Dr. Sanchez. "This field reflects a shared commitment to our students, and it’s exciting to see them step onto a space they’ll use each day for learning, play, and connection.”

“Seeing them take those first steps onto the field is something they’ll remember for years to come.”

The new athletic field will serve students across grade levels throughout the school day and beyond, supporting physical education, recess, athletics, and community use. For students like Bella, it also represents something more personal: a space where memories begin, friendships grow, and traditions continue.
