Water Rates for Greenburgh District Likely to Go Up

A public hearing will be held on the water rates Wednesday.

Water rates for the Greenburgh water district will be going up in 2016.

The town will be holding a public hearing on water rates Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at town hall, 177 Hillside Ave.

An email from Town Supervisor Paul Feiner said there were a number of factors in the decision to raise water rates 9.5 percent.

New York City, from which Greenburgh purchases it water, is expected to increase what it charges the district by 8.6 percent.

The last time the district raised its rate was in 2014.

Additionally, Feiner said infrastructure needs have to be addressed.

Some of the improvements the district will be undertaking include:

Water tank painting: $4,899,109

  • Additional Water Tank Painting: $5,000,000
  • Rumbrook/Knollwood Transmission Main: $7,500,000 to $12,300,000
  • Pump Station Rehabilitation: $8,200,000 to $13,300,000
  • Replace substandard pipe infrastructure: $1,500,000 annually
  • Clean and Line pipes: $1,500,000 to $3,000,000 annually

One savings the district has been able to achieve is by converting meter reading to an automated system.

Because the meters will no longer have to be manually read, the workforce will be reduced by attrition.

Feiner said the town would continue to explore other ways to save residents money.
