Week 4 Proves Tough For Sleepy Hollow Football Club
The Under Age 10 Red Angels Relax After a Tough Home Game in the Heat Sunday September 28th at Washington Irving

For the first time in its inaugural season the Sleepy Hollow Football Club did not win a majority of its games. On a hot Sunday, Sept 28th, the club earned 4 wins, 4 losses, and 3 ties. This week is special, as several players will be attending the NY Red Bulls game Saturday evening before playing their next opponent on Sunday. The Club is now 25-9-9. Below is a recap of last Sunday’s games provided by the coaches.
In a game that was marked by strong keeper play by both sides, the Rye Spirit defeated the under age 9 girls Magic by the score of 3-2. The Magic had scores by Emily Orellana and co-captain Shea Bertolacci, as well as determined offense by Nicolette Cioffi, Anastasia Mazon, Amy Torres, and sisters Natalie and Emily Rypka. The Magic was also co-captained by Caitlyn O’Hanlon. Next Sunday the Magic coached by Mac McLaurin travel to Mount Kisco to take on FC Transylvania Red Storm.
The under age 9 boys Sentinels lost 3-1 this week to the Pelham Hotspurs in a game that was well played by both sides. The Hotspurs scored first, but the Sentinels fought back to tie the game early in the second half. Unfortunately, Pelham regained the lead shortly thereafter with two quick goals. The Sentinels continued playing hard and made a strong push in the final minutes, hitting the crossbar on one shot and forcing the Pelham goalkeeper to make impressive saves, but they just couldn’t find the net. All in all it was a good performance against a strong team with the boys showing real improvement in their communication and positional play. Next week the Sentinels take on Yonkers United in Yonkers.

The U9 Boys Warriors played at home against the Castleford Wave on a very hot fall Sunday afternoon. Goals by D.McCarthy, T.Junge and C.Gallagher notched a 3-0 win for the Warriors. Solid defense by R.Molina, J.Arnegger and C.Gallagher kept their keepers reasonably unchallenged. Led by coaches Colin Gallagher, Chris Junge and Todd Dorman, the warriors will next play the Scarsdale Black Deportivo at home Sunday on Washington Irving field at 2.30pm.
The under age 10 girls Red Angels captained this week by Julia Schroeder played a hard fought 0-0 tie in the hot afternoon. Both teams had some great scoring opportunities. The Red Angel goal keeping and defense was solid, led by Ajsa Orban, Priscilla Arteaga & Zoe Kuhn. Coach Mike Levine and Nick Tsilibes’s squad next play their sister club from the Rivertowns, the Falcons, at Washington Irving field on Sunday at 1:15pm.

The under age 10 boys Legends had an entertaining 1-1 tie with Mount Pleasant on Sunday. The boys had terrific passing including many backwards passes to maintain possession. One of these led to the goal with Brandon Morocho playing a 1-2 with Adrian Rodriguez who curled a shot in to the far top corner. With the coaches buttoning their collective lips on Silent Sunday the team absolutely proved that they could play independently; maintaining their shape, communicating, and generating most of the chances in the game. The boys are looking forward to a trip to see the Red Bulls on Saturday. Fergus O’Sullivan’s boys next play at Edgemont Sunday.
The under age 11 girls Strikers played their first home game of the season and the second game in a row against a team from NYC. The girls played a competitive game starting off strong by scoring three goals in the first half. The visitors didn’t have any substitutes and they were missing some key players including their goalkeeper. As the game went on the challenge for the team was not to violate the “blowout” league rules. The Strikers ended up playing a possession game of keep away from the other team. Matt Evans’ team was successful, winning the game 6-0. It was a true team effort with the six goals scored by five different girls. The win puts the Stikers in second place in their division. The girls are off next Sunday, but are looking forward to a scrimmage challenge from a team two divisions up.
The under age 11 boys Tornadoes endured a heartbreak 5-4 defeat at Losee Park on Sunday against the Yonkers Rush Attack. After a 2-0 start, the Tornadoes conceded 5 goals before adding 2 more to the boards. D. Dorman, D. Dorman, G McLaurin, and V. Ribeiro scored goals for the Tornadoes. S. Wozniak and Z. Burnett made assists. T. Smith, C. Ricchiuti, and J. Taylor each served valiantly in the keeper position. Coaches Todd Dorman, Scott Burnett, Colin Gallagher, Todd Smith, and Glen Taylor must now get the Tornadoes ready to meet rival Ossining Sunday.
The under age 12 girls Mustangs led by coach John Sutherland defeated the Eastchester Fury 5-0. Talia Fante (2), Emma Clarke, Lily Rodriguez, and Britany Alban scored goals, while Maddy Navin, Sadie Swenson, Annie Dineen, Carolina Lopez, and Catherine Grimes earned their third shutout of the year. The first place undefeated Mustangs next play at Briarcliff Sunday.
The under age 13 girls Horsemen lost to the division-leading Yonkers United Rush Raptors by the score of 0-2 this past Sunday at Tibbetts Brook Park in Yonkers. The Horsemen played the Raptors close, giving up a goal in each half. The team’s next game will be its first home game of the season at Washington Irving field Sunday against the Chappaqua Hurricane. Kick off for coach Tom Schumacher’s squad is scheduled for 3:15pm.
The under age 13 boys Tornadoes played to a 1-1 draw at home against a very disciplined and talented Asphalt Green Wave Galaxy from the Upper East Side. The Galaxy scored first off a hard left footed strike inside the box. The Tornadoes came back in the middle of the second half with a great strike from Joey Morquecho into the top corner of the net after a nice pass from Adam Geisker. DJ Kronin thought he had put the Tornadoes in the lead with a well-placed shot over the keeper’s head, but it was called back for an offside. The backs played well against the relentless attack from the Galaxy with Joe Cioffi and Sebastian Compuzano playing superb, and keeper Nolan Fairley collecting 12 of the13 shots on goal as well as pulling down two dangerously placed corner kicks. Overall the Tornadoes fought hard and showed a lot of heart to draw with the 2nd placed Galaxy. Their next game is Sunday in Mamaroneck.
The U14 girls Eagles came away on Sunday with a hard earned 1-0 win against the Rye Riptide. The lone goal was scored by Taylor Burnett off an assist from Julia Friedman during the first half. Coach Paul Jeris’ offense struggled in the heat most of the match, while the defense, led by keeper Emily Jeris, backs Zarina Nabi, and Jessica Pordy, as well as midfielder Natalie Smith, preserved the one goal lead through heavy fire in the second half. The 3-1-0 Eagles go on the road to NYC next week to take on the Down Town United Soccer Club’s Strikers.
