School district superintendent Howard Smith says if all goes well, the YMCA could have keys to its new childcare facility on the hill as soon as August 1.

It's looking very possible that the YMCA as soon as August 1.

This, according to District Superintendent Howard Smith who said the district (the landlord to this empty school) reviewed the Y's proposal for the space – in fact, the only proposal received – and are working out details of a draft lease agreement with the organization. The YMCA hopes to both consolidate, and expand, all of its childcare programs into this soon vacant school. (Green Meadow is finishing up their term in two rented rooms there now.)

The district's attorney is drawing up a draft lease that the Board of Education will look at, said Smith. Following this will be a formal presentation to the public on June 14. “If all goes well, we could approve an agreement in July and they could move in August 1,” said Smith, cautioning, “but we don't want to get ahead of it.”

First the Board reviews and the public can ask questions, then “we can start to look at specifics.”

At least one teacher at the YMCA this week was very excited for the prospect, as she struggled to pull children's sleep mats out of a crowded hallway shelf space. “I can't wait,” she said.

“There's a lot going on here,” Barbara Turk, VP of Marketing and Community Development, said previously. “We're very hopeful and excited about the possibilities.”

The June 14 Board of Education meeting is conducted at the District Administration Building, 200 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow, at 8 p.m. Also on the agenda: tenure recognition and goals report.
