“Andrew Wyeth Abstract” presented by Jonathan Van Brunt, October 28th at 7PM

Andrew Newell Wyeth was primarily a realist painter who worked in
a regionalist style, often painting the land and people of his hometown in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and his summer home in Cushing, Maine, He was one of the best- known representational U.S. artists of the middle 20th century and his influences included the landscape artist Winslow Homer. But, further analysis of his work reveals many paintings more in line with the abstract expressionists he admired. In fact, he often considered himself to be an "abstractionist".

While public perception has made a clear division between Wyeth and “Modern” artists, they both share a reactionary and impulsive approach to making art, with the focus being on two-dimensional composition and spontaneous emotional expression.

This lecture will be presented by Jonathan Van Brunt, who also considers both Winslow Homer along with Franz Kline to be influences. Jon’s love for landscape painting came from seeing the work of Andrew Wyeth. A focus on composition as well as expressive application of paint has been the basis of Jon’s work. A student at Maine College of Art & Design, Jon earned a B.F.A. in Printmaking. He went on to earn an M.F.A in Painting at Ohio University School of Art & Design where he developed his abstract art style while teaching two- dimensional design during his graduate studies.
