The Atelier at Flowerfield

Celebrate the return of Spring and May Day with this workshop. Did you know that May Day has its roots in astronomy? Traditionally, it was the halfway point between the spring equinox and the summer solstice! People around the world celebrate “Bringing in the May,” by gathering cuttings of flowering branches of forsythia, magnolia, redbud, lilac, or other flowering cuttings.
Here at The Atelier, we celebrate May Day by painting a garden and not have any weeds! At this workshop, you will learn how to paint flowers in either oils or acrylics.Your instructor, Pam Best, is an Atelier Fellow and her floral paintings have won the hearts of many.You can select any or all of these flowers to create your own bouquet to keep or give as a gift.
The cost for this 3-hour workshop on Saturday, May 9th, is $100 per person which includes materials. The Atelier is offering a May Day workshop:  “Paint a Garden of Flowers” with Pam Best on May 9th

One of the most significant artists of the 20th century, Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1986) was devoted to creating imagery that expressed what she called “the wideness and wonder of the world as I live in it.”&nbsp;Her art and life were deeply influenced by transcendentalism, mirroring the philosophies of Emerson and Thoreau through her spiritual connection to nature, solitude, and the American Southwest landscape. Using abstract forms, she captured the "essential" spirit of subjects like flowers and bones, reflecting a search for deeper meaning, self-reliance and emotional purity.Though a New York resident, she traveled to Taos, New Mexico, in 1929 where expansive skies and distinct desert landscapes transformed her vision and connected her with artists of the Transcendental Painting Group (TPG), who explored abstraction as a spiritual and modern response to the Southwest. Though TPG was short lived, functioning as a group from 1938 to 1941, its members where influential from the late 1920s through the 20th century.
Transcendentalism emphasizes the importance of being close to nature. Many of O’Keeffe’s most famous paintings are of flowers and other plants and objects found in nature. She traveled to different parts of the United States and found inspiration in what she saw while exploring. Georgia O’Keeffe was also a nonconformist and she preferred to work alone. These ideas of nonconformity and self-reliance are also important tenets of Transcendentalism.
This lecture is presented by John Cino,a sculptor, art educator and curator. He graduated from Hunter College of the City University of New with a Masters Degree in Fine Arts and from Stony Brook University with a BA in Fine Arts. After holding positions as a gallery assistant for noted NY artist Ed Buonagurio and as an art teacher for the NYC public Schools, John began teaching on the collegiate level. He is currently teaching sculpture and three-dimensial design at Nassau Community College and Farmingdale State College. He has curated many exhibitions in New York City and Long Island, including 14 Sculptors Gallery, Adelphi University, the Islip Museum and Nassau Community College. He is the senior curator of the Patchogue Arts Council Gallery, now the Museum of Contemporary Art, Long Island and has been since its inception in 2008.

The Atelier

Painting en plein air is a French expression meaning “in the open air.” It’s not so much a style as it is the effects of the weather, changing light and time constraints on the artist.Plein air painting gained popularity during the 19th century, particularly among the Impressionist painters, who sought to capture the effects of light and color in the natural world. Artists such as Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Camille Pissarro were known for their plein air works, which often featured vibrant colors and loose brushstrokes to convey the atmosphere and mood of the scenes they painted.
Fred Mendelsohn, your instructor, will guide students through the steps of creating a successful painting “en plein air” using pastel, oil, acrylic or watercolor paints. He will share his creative process, sources of inspiration, and tools and techniques. The beginning stages, consisting of preliminary sketches and blocking in, will be discussed and practiced, as will elements further into the painting process: color harmony, value and atmospheric perspective. 
Frederic Mendelsohn, is a modern-day Renaissance man — neurologist, philanthropist, author, musician and artist. He is the holder of both a BA and MA degree as well as a MD, andis predominantly a landscape artist utilizing both oil and egg tempera paints. With over four decades of experience, Frederic has studied extensively with the Art Students League in NYC, The Art League of Long Island, New School University, and Marymount College, and is a proud member of the Long Island Museum Artist Guild as well as the Setauket Artist Group and the North Shore Art Guild.
The fee for this 5-hour workshop is $110. A variety of ability levels are welcomed and the materials list will be available on our website when registering. Students are asked to meet at the atelier for a brief orientation before continuing to the selected site for the day. If time permits, you will return to the atelier to review and critique the day's work in studio light.
