-11th Annual Downey Memorial Golf Outing-
Affectionately referred to as “The Master of Disaster”, FDNY Deputy Chief Raymond M. Downey, Commanding Officer of the Special Operations Comma...nd (SOC), died in the line of duty while helping others escape from the World Trade Center on Tuesday, September 11, 2001. He truly was a legend in his own time.
Ray was Stony Brook Football’s #1 fan and instrumental in helping to build the program. With his tireless dedication, he helped Stony Brook Football prepare itself for the move to the NCAA Division 1 FCS level by raising funds for much needed program and facility improvements.
The Downey Family has created the Raymond M. Downey Scholarship Endowment fund in Deputy Chief Downey’s memory. The future recipients of these funds will demonstrate the same integrity, work, ethic, discipline, and courage that Ray Downey exemplified throughout his life. The golf outing is a unique way to honor his devotion to the football program and to support Stony Brook University’s student-athletes.
