UPDATE: Small Fire at Stony Brook University Extinguished, 1 Employee Hurt

Fire broke out in the Math Tower Wednesday afternoon.

A small fire in the Math Tower at Stony Brook University has now been extinguished, school officials said Wednesday afternoon. 

A school employee was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, officials said. No other injuries were reported.

All classes scheduled for Wednesday evening in both the Math Tower and the Physics Building are canceled while damage is assessed and cleanup operations are completed, officials said.

Further information regarding classes Thursday will be posted on the Office of Emergency Management website at www.stonybrook.edu/emergency/alerts as soon as possible.

The fire, which started at about 3:20 p.m., comes on the same day as the school’s annual campus fire prevention day.
