Centereach, N.Y. (December 2019)—The Middle Country Central School District recently announced its November Students of the Month at its recent Board of Education meeting. Newfield High School senior Hamnah Khan, Centereach High School senior Amanda Harrop, Dawnwood Middle School eighth grader Kiara Bosch, and Selden Middle School seventh grader Addison Rothwell were recognized for exceling in scholarship, citizenship and community service.
“It is an honor to recognize these four remarkable students: Hamnah, Amanda, Kiara, and Addison. Individually, each of these students exhibit the true spirit, passion and values of the Middle Country Central School District,” said Dr. Roberta Gerold, Superintendent of Schools. “The diligence and heart represented by these four honorees is rare and we are humbled each day, as we watch them act as leaders and role models for their peers. Congratulations on this much deserved achievement.”
Hamnah Khan, senior at Newfield High School, was recognized as Newfield’s Student of the Month as a result of her dedication to her education and self-betterment that serves as a positive and enriching example to her peers. With a weighted GPA of 94.7234, Hamnah will be graduating with a total of 13 completed college level and Advanced Placement (AP) courses. In addition to her academic success, Hamnah is president of the National Honor Society, as well as a member of Dr. Gerold’s leadership club, the newspaper club, National Art Honor Society, the Foreign Language Honor Society, and the book club. Outside of school, Hamnah dedicates her time serving as president and coordinator of the Muslim Girls Youth Group and works as a 2nd grade religious studies teacher.

While in the midst of her senior year, Hamnah is currently applying to colleges including New York Institute of Technology, Hofstra, St. Joseph’s and her number one choice, Stony Brook. She will be majoring in health science with a goal of becoming a pediatrician, following her passion to help others, especially children.
Centereach High School senior Amanda Harrop’s recognition as the November Student of the Month can be attributed to her outstanding leadership skills and rigorous academics. During her time in high school, Amanda has taken seven AP courses and eight additional college level courses, is a member of both the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society and served as Junior Class Vice-President. Outside of the classroom, Amanda dedicates her time as a camp counselor at Hobbs Farm in Centereach and several volleyball camps. Described by her teachers as “one of the brightest and most selfless,” Amanda “continues to look for new ways to improve” in all aspects of life. During her athletic career, Amanda earned All-League honors during the last two seasons of varsity volleyball and led her team into the playoffs while serving as captain.

As Amanda nears the end of her high school years, she is preparing to study business and marketing at one of the following universities: SUNY Binghamton, Boston University, Northeastern University, Pace University and the University of Connecticut.
Kiara Bosch, eighth grade student at Dawnwood Middle School, was selected as Dawnwood Middle School’s Student of the Month for her work ethic and distinguished character. Described by her teachers as a student who continues to exceed expectations, is receptive to the needs of others and goes above and beyond all fascist with a smile on her face, Kiara holds an overall GPA of 98.2. Outside the classroom, Kiara is the vice president of the National Junior Honor Society, treasurer of the yearbook club, a member of various extracurricular activities including the band, jazz band, plant club and tech club.
Selden Middle School seventh grade student—and November Student of the Month—Addison Rothwell was recognized for her consistent dedication, curiosity and perseverance. Described by her ELA teacher, Mrs. O’Shea, Addison is attentive, hardworking, and self-motivated. While maintaining a quarterly average of 98.3, Addison continues to make a positive contribution in SMS through her involvement on the girls’ soccer team and the band. As a reflection of her strong performances both inside and outside the classroom, Addison was named Captain of the Week for her soccer team this fall and performed a level 4 flute solo at a NYSSMA competition last spring.
