Origami Heaven Exhibition Opens at the Charles B. Wang Center
Fall exhibitions and cultural programs open at the Charles B. Wang Center at Stony Brook University
The Charles B. Wang Center at Stony Brook University is pleased to
present Origami Heaven , September 9 - December 31, an exhibition that showcases the extraordinary power and potential of contemporary origami with the work of artists, Thomas Crain (USA), George Hart (USA), Hiroshi Hayakawa (Japan), Qi Hu (China), Wonju Seo (Korea/USA), Fatima Shakil (Pakistan), Jule Waibel (Germany) and Kumi Yamashita (Japan) with an opening reception on Wednesday, September 9 at 5:00 PM. These visionary masters redefine the art of origami into breathtaking paintings, sophisticated furniture, wearable fashion, large-scale installations, and conceptual works that express an extraordinary range of bold statements and beautiful ideas. Opening remarks at the reception will be made by Vanessa Gould, Director of the documentary, Between the Folds, showing in the Video Gallery.
RELATED PUBLIC PROGRAMS
In conjunction with our origami exhibition, we have several related programs. V anessa Gould, director of documentary film, Between the Folds , will share observations on the enigmatic and surprising process of making her documentary on Wednesday, September 9, at 5:00 PM at the Charles B. Wang Center Theatre. Over four years, Gould researched and documented origami and paper artists around the world that revealed unexpected metaphors about film, life, creativity, and the idea of transformation.
Patchwork artist Wonju Seo teaches two workshops on an array of origami techniques for folding fabric into exciting and beautiful geometric designs influenced by traditional Korean temple door patterns on Wednesday, September 16 at 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM at the Charles B. Wang Center Chapel. ($20.00 General/$10.00 students/Seniors). Participants at all origami experience levels are welcome.

On Wednesday, October 15 at 2:30 PM at the Charles B. Wang Center Lecture Hall I, artist Kumi Yamashita will give an overview her work and discuss how she has been inspired by origami. Yamashita’s work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally including the Seattle Art Museum, the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco, the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, the Honolulu Museum of Art, and the Liverpool Biennial.
George W. Hart is a research professor at Stony Brook University who is recognized worldwide as an interdisciplinary sculptor, mathematician, computer scientist, and an educator. Hart will conduct a workshop at the Charles B. Wang Center Chapel on Wednesday, October 28 at 1:00 PM. ($10.00 General/$5.00 Students/Seniors) Participants will learn how to make an intricate construction from playing cards. Hart will give a lecture at 6:00 PM at Charles B. Wang Center Theatre on kirigami, the art of paper cutting and the mathematical ideas that underlie it.
