At R.C. Murphy and P.J. Gelinas junior high schools, with the help of their physical education teachers, school counselors, and PPS staff, the students took part in a hands-on interactive lesson dedicated to the topic. They discussed the essential questions of what Unity Day means, the definition of a social footprint and how that relates to Unity Day before brainstorming ways students can spread awareness and promote unity and kindness. They then worked in small groups to create WordArt Footprints with words of unity, acceptance and kindness. Many of the completed designs were showcased at the schools and celebrated by all.
Additionally, students in many of the district’s schools wore orange – the official color of Unity Day – and elementary school students made posters to recognize a commitment to unity, kindness and empathy, which were hung in the hallway at Ward Melville High School for all to see. At Nassakeag, students also decorated ornaments to hang on the trees in the school bus circle.
