Ward Melville Senior Scavenger Hunt List Includes Numerous Illegal Activities

UPDATE 2:30 p.m. Monday: Three Village Superintendent Cheryl Pedisich has released the following statement:

At this time, based on preliminary conversations with several students and law enforcement authorities the district has no reason to believe that this scavenger hunt took place. There is currently no evidence to support that any of our students participated in such actions or behaviors and, to the best of our knowledge, we cannot prove that there is any validity to this event. It is also important to note that the event was in no way connected to the school district, since it allegedly took place outside of school hours and without any endorsement from the school district.

If, and when, the district ever has any prior knowledge about such activities, we always proactively share such information with our community. We believe that it is important for parents and school districts to be partners in educating our youth about making the best choices as well as understanding the potential consequences associated with using poor judgment and partaking in negative behaviors/activities.

Ward Melville High School seniors took part in their annual scavenger hunt on Saturday and those who collected the most points likely engaged in numerous unsavory and illegal activities, according to a list obtained by Patch.

Participants in the scavenger hunt received a varying number of points for 30 tasks, including “capture a sophomore and get them drunk or high,” “streak in a public place” and “steal a McDonald’s napkin dispenser.”

Patch was sent the list by a Setauket resident, who wished to remain anonymous, but said: “I think everyone in the community should be aware!! Not only is it appalling, but there are numerous ILLEGAL activities that took place!!! This should never be tolerated on any level!!! There are dangerous consequences that come from these types of illegal activities for the students and the residents!!! The school is fully aware this takes place and chooses to allow this...I think they’ve beaten any other school with this unpalatable scavenger hunt!! I fear for my children going to high school!”

in a statement released Sunday night, Three Village Superintendent Cheryl Pedisich said news of the scavenger hunt comes as a “complete surprise to the district.”

“If there is any validly to this scavenger hunt, the district most certainly had no prior knowledge of it,” she said. “The district does not condone these types of behaviors nor do they represent what the district teaches our student population. The district will be conducting an internal investigation first thing Monday morning and will interview students to determine if there is any truth to their participation in this scavenger hunt.”

A similar scavenger hunt list for seniors at Sachem High School East in Farmingville made national headlines last year.
