📰 News we're reading

1. A Fake Microsoft Alert Put Her Life Savings Into Scammers' Hands (wealthofgeeks.com) — A Tonawanda resident in her 70s was tricked by a fake Microsoft security alert into handing over cash and buying gold for scammers, losing much of about $360,000 in savings. Federal agents ultimately intervened during a gold pickup tied to her Tonawanda home and arrested an alleged courier. The case highlights how pop‑up “security” messages and remote‑access software can expose bank accounts and urges residents to report suspicious calls immediately.

2. Upstate NY man gets probation, lifetime animal ban for fatally stabbing a Boston terrier (syracuse.com) — A 21-year-old man has been sentenced to five years’ probation and a lifetime ban on owning animals after fatally stabbing a Boston terrier inside his City of Tonawanda home. City of Tonawanda police, dog control officers, and the SPCA Serving Erie County collaborated on the investigation, which used forensic testing to link a kitchen knife to the dog’s injuries.

3. Canal Fest's move to Gratwick Park might not be permanent (wkbw.com) — Canal Fest of the Tonawandas is being held this year at Gratwick Riverside Park in North Tonawanda instead of its traditional Erie Canal setting in the City of Tonawanda, and organizers say the larger space allows more rides, vendors, and easier walking. Some longtime attendees miss the canal scenery and intimate feel, and festival leaders will review feedback before deciding whether to return to the Erie Canal in future years.

4. Attorney General James Announces Arrest of Buffalo Nursing Home Worker Charged With Sexual Assault of a Vulnerable Resident (einpresswire.com) — A Buffalo nursing home aide has been arrested on felony charges after allegedly sexually assaulting a dementia patient, with the Tonawanda Police Department forwarding the case to the state Attorney General’s office. The defendant was arraigned in Tonawanda Town Court, where bail was set at $100,000, and state investigators say their Medicaid Fraud Control Unit continues to examine nursing home safety issues.

5. SLU's oldest 2026 graduate earns one more accolade (northcountrynow.com) — A 55-year-old Tonawanda resident, Marc Isaacs, has earned St. Lawrence University’s North Country Research Prize for the Humanities for an autoethnography exploring his Mohawk identity and life journey. After returning decades later to finish his degree, he’s now working in Buffalo and planning graduate study in Indigenous Studies. His story connects Tonawanda to statewide conversations about culture, education, and representation.
