📰 News we're reading

1. Legislation allowing for redevelopment of Troy's One Monument Square passes city council (cbs6albany.com) — Troy’s City Council has unanimously approved legislation to sell the long-vacant One Monument Square property, clearing the way for a major waterfront redevelopment downtown. The plan centers on new offices for local game developer Velan, plus green space, a park, underground parking, and restaurant and business space. City leaders say it could become one of Troy’s most significant economic development projects.

2. Troy City Council takes steps to limit mayor's emergency powers (timesunion.com) — Troy’s City Council is advancing a charter change that would tighten when the mayor can declare a state of emergency, following controversy over funding Flock Safety license plate cameras. After two public hearings with residents speaking in support, council leaders say they could pass the measure in early August and are prepared to override an expected veto from Mayor Carmella Mantello.

3. Firefighters execute rescue at Poestenkill Gorge (wnyt.com) — Troy firefighters spent more than two hours Friday night rescuing a man trapped by powerful currents in the restricted Poestenkill Gorge, ultimately getting him out in stable but exhausted condition. City officials and the fire chief are again warning residents that swimming in the gorge is illegal and extremely dangerous, noting past deaths and urging people to stay out of the water there.

4. 25 percent of freshmen fail introductory math, SUNY turns to mandatory tutoring (campusreform.org) — SUNY is overhauling introductory math and writing after about a quarter of freshmen fail key gateway courses, and Hudson Valley Community College in Troy is part of the push. HVCC is shrinking preparatory math class sizes and adding instructional time to give students more support, while SUNY tracks whether these changes boost course completion, retention, and graduation across the system.

5. Art Pharmacy project offers artistic prescription for loneliness (timesunion.com) — A new Art Pharmacy initiative based in Troy is gearing up to connect lonely residents with free or low-cost local arts and creative events through referrals from their mental health providers. Led by Russell Sage College faculty and theater artist Michael Kennedy, the Rensselaer County program plans to cover tickets and possibly transportation, aiming to reduce isolation and build community through shared cultural experiences.
