Elderly Woman Dies In Upper East Side Apartment Fire

A 94-year-old woman died in an Upper East Side apartment fire early Tuesday that also injured a woman and an infant, authorities said.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — An elderly woman died in a fire that broke out early Tuesday in an Upper East Side apartment that also left a woman and a baby hospitalized, according to the FDNY.

A call came in around 1:22 a.m. Tuesday about a fire in a third-floor apartment at 270 East 78th St., on the corner of Second Avenue, authorities said.

After suppressing the fire, firefighters found the victim, a 94-year-old woman, inside the apartment. She was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

A 32-year-old woman and a three-month-old baby were also hospitalized in stable condition, the FDNY said.

Footage from the scene showed flames shooting out of the six-story building, where 25 units and 106 firefighters responded. Crews managed to bring the fire under control by 3:15 a.m.

The fire marshal is investigating what caused the fire. The victim's name is being withheld pending family notification, authorities said.
