As director of Aszure Barton &amp; Artists | AB&amp;A — a multidisciplinary dance hub founded in New York in the early 2000s — Aszure has expanded beyond the conventional choreographer-company structure by reshaping what it means to build a body of work, “a mobile home for trusted humans,” as she says. Since its inception, she’s been generating dance language with her most-trusted AB&amp;A crew while simultaneously creating commissions worldwide — all through a rigorous, collaborative process that simultaneously respects and dismantles classical and contemporary forms. “FIVE SESSIONS…A War in Therapy”–, a gripping new play by the playwright&nbsp; (JS/MSW) Jaime Estades. Set in present-day New York City, this intense psychological drama confronts audiences with urgent questions about systemic injustice, and the limits of institutional care.
Over the course of five charged therapy sessions, the audience is drawn into a confined space where two individuals collide: a recent graduate therapist with a privilege background–trained with clinical tools and good intentions but non-experiential, and a Latino building superintendent, labor organizer, and a man on the edge, shaped by grief, exploitation, and systemic neglect. “FIVE SESSIONS…A War in Therapy”—it is a theatrical confrontation.
