Manhole Fire Sends Thick Smoke Over Upper East Side Street

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — Firefighters are working to contain a fire inside a manhole billowing thick smoke on the Upper East Side Wednesday morning, New York City Fire Department officials said.

According to the FDNY, the smoke was first spotted rising over the street in front of 447 East 87th St. between York and First avenues at 10:23 a.m.

The FDNY blocked off the area to locate and extinguish the fire and Con Edison, the energy company affiliated with the manhole, is on the scene.

According to witnesses on the Citizen app, a loud explosion was heard shortly before the smoke started pouring out of the manhole.

FDNY officials said no one has been injured, and that firefighting operations at the site are ongoing.
