UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — The state Department of Health will investigate Mount Sinai Hospital after a New York Post report published this week revealed horrible conditions at the medical facility.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered the probe into the Upper East Side medical facility following the Post's Monday report. A spokesperson for the governor described stories of the "mistreatment of patients" at the hospital as "horrific and unacceptable," according to the Post.

Workers at Mount Sinai described the hospital's emergency room as a "war zone" in the Post report. Nurses told the newspaper that they saw as many as 18 patients per shift and that patients went into cardiac arrest without anyone noticing.

Mount Sinai issued a statement in response to the New York Post article saying that the report "in no way reflects the current status of our Emergency Department," and citing the hospital's high survival rates for patients entering the emergency room suffering from heart attacks, lung failure and stroke. Hospital officials also said that Mount Sinai has made "major investments and improvements" at its emergency room since an 2016 strategic review of the department.

"We are deeply proud that our Emergency Department reflects the diverse community we serve. As it was on day one, the safety, care and accessibility for all of our patients has - and will always remain - our first and singular focus," the hospital's statement reads.

Nurses at Mount Sinai threatened a strike earlier this year, but were able to come to an agreement with hospital administrators for a new contract. Chief among nurse's concerns during negotiations was safe nurse-to-patient staffing ratios.
