Two Upper East Side Hospitals Ranked Among Best in the Country

U.S. News and World Report on Tuesday released its list of the country's best hospitals, naming two on the Upper East Side.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — U.S. News and World Report on Tuesday released its list of the best hospitals in the country, and two health care institutions on the Upper East Side scored high marks. New York Presbyterian Hospital and Mount Sinai Hospital were both named to the study's nationwide "honor roll," signifying that they are two of the best 20 hospitals in the country.

New York Presbyterian was ranked No. 6 and Mount Sinai was ranked No. 15 on the honor roll. Both were nationally ranked in more than 10 of the 16 specialties the study uses to grade hospitals.

To compile the rankings, U.S. News and World Report used several different objective measurements such as patient survival, number of patients and staffing numbers. The publication also used survey data from qualified physicians, who were asked to name the top five hospitals in their specialty.

VA and military hospitals were not included, the publication said, because the federal government is reluctant to release performance data from those hospitals. Procedures and conditions that were considered included hip replacement and heart failure.

Hospitals were also ranked according to these 16 specialties:

  1. Cancer
  2. Cardiology and heart surgery
  3. Diabetes and endocrinology
  4. Ear, nose and throat
  5. Gastroenterology and GI surgery
  6. Geriatrics
