UES College To Merge With Northeastern This Summer: Report

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — A slice of Boston is coming to the Upper East Side this summer.

Northeastern University's deal to take over Marymount Manhattan College, located on East 71st Street between Second and Third avenues, is in the final stretch and expected to be finalized by June 30, Bloomberg reported.

Marymount's Lenox Hill campus will become the Boston school's first Manhattan site, renamed "Northeastern- New York City," once federal regulators sign off on the agreement.

According to Bloomberg, the Department of Education approved the merger in November, and the schools are waiting on the final step, which is related to federal student aid.

The deal between the schools was first made back in 2024. Marymount Manhattan College officials previously told Patch the decision stemmed from a challenging economic landscape confronting smaller liberal arts colleges and universities.

"Recognizing the significant headwinds facing small liberal arts colleges, MMC’s Board decided to pursue this path to ensure the continuation of MMC’s student-centered approach to education for generations to come," said Abby Fiorella, Chair of MMC’s Board of Trustees.

As part of the deal, tuition and fees for Marymount Manhattan students will not increase after the merger, aside from annual adjustments.

Additionally, Marymount Manhattan's 80 full-time faculty members will be extended one-year contracts and will be assessed for faculty positions at Northeastern University.

Northeastern is awaiting final approval for the merger from the U.S. Department of Education, according to Bloomberg.
