Upper East Side's 'Daily Bagel' Closed By Health Department
Daily Bagel on First Avenue was closed due to evidence of mice, roaches and flies in food prep areas, according to the health department.
UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — An Upper East Side bagel place was closed by the city Health Department last week after racking up violations for mice, flies and roaches — among other nastiness — during an inspection last week.
Daily Bagel on the corner of East 61st Street and First Avenue was shuttered after failing its second inspection in a span of two months, according to the Health Department. During its most recent inspection on July 7 the bagel place scored a staggering 77 violation points — well over the 28 point threshold to score a "C."
Inspectors found cold food stored at improper temperatures, food prep areas contaminated by liquid waste, contaminated raw food and evidence of mice, roaches and "filth flies" during the recent inspection, according to the Health Department. And those were just the "critical" violations. Inspectors also deemed the facility "not vermin proof" and the fridge had no thermometer, according to the health department.

During a May 23 inspection the restaurant score 33 violation points, good enough for a "C" grade.
The Health Department generally opts to close restaurants after an inspection if it deems a violation a "public health hazard," that can not be corrected before an inspection ends or for "serious and persistent violations," according to its grading methodology.

A manager from Daily Bagel told Patch that he is unsure when the Health Department will come back to re-inspect the restaurant.
