Cyclist Struck by Box Truck on Upper West Side Thursday Dies: NYPD

Both the bicyclist and the box truck were traveling northbound on Broadway Thursday afternoon, police told Patch.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A bicyclist was struck and killed by a Box Truck on the Upper West Side just before noon Thursday, an NYPD spokesman told Patch.

Both the biker and the truck driver were traveling north on Broadway near West 88th Street when the bicyclist allegedly swerved in front of the truck to avoid a parked vehicle, police said. The driver, a 30-year-old man, stayed on the scene and has not been charged, police told Patch.

Jing Yin Jiang, 59, was transported to St. Luke's hospital and pronounced dead at noon, police said.

Broadway was temporarily shut down to traffic between West 88th and West 89th streets during the emergency response, according to a tweet sent out by the 24th Police Precinct.

Thursday's fatal crash was the second collision involving a box truck on the Upper West Side this week. On Tuesday morning a 24-year-old man was sent to the hospital with critical injuries after being hit by a box truck crossing through Amsterdam Avenue and West 84th Street at 4:50 a.m., police told Patch. In the same collision a 26-year-old man suffered minor injuries and was treated on the scene.

Tuesday's collision was a hit-and-run, and police are still investigating the incident.
