Citi Bike Launches 2016 Expansion With New Upper West Side Stations

The installation of new Citi Bike stations on the Upper West Side began Monday, Aug. 1.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — Starting Monday, Aug. 1, Upper West Siders should expect to see new Citi Bike stations popping throughout the neighborhood as part of the bike share program's 2016 expansion plan. Citi Bike is planning to add more than 2o new stations in the neighborhood to stretch coverage as far uptown as West 110th Street, according to the program's website.

As of Tuesday new stations have been installed at West 87 Street and Amsterdam Avenue and at West 87th Street and West End Avenue.

The expansion project also calls for stations to be installed on the Upper East Side as well as several neighborhoods in Brooklyn. In addition, Citi Bike will be adding a few stations to its network in Jersey City. The expansion will increase network density by adding 140 new Citi Bike stations and increasing the number of bikes in circulation from 8,000 to 10,000.

“We are thrilled to be able to continue bringing Citi Bike to scale across New York City,” said Jay Walder, President & CEO of Motivate, the operators of Citi Bike, in a press release. “Bike share is a great resource for the city’s residents and visitors alike – making commutes flexible, fun, and fast. Our hope is that as more blue bikes arrive on city streets, that everyone will give it a try.”

Here are Citi Bike expansion stations listed as "coming soon" to the Upper West Side:

These stations are listed as "coming soon," which means that they may not all be installed by year's end. Many of the listed stations were only just proposed in July at a Community Board 7 committee meeting. At that meeting several neighborhood residents spoke out against newly proposed stations as well as stations that were proposed and approved by the board in 2015 (which are also listed above).

Dani Simons, a spokeswoman for Motivate, told Patch in May that the installation schedule is not available for specific stations.

Citi Bike's annual membership fee is $155. Public housing residents, as well as members of certain Community Development Credit Unions, can receive $60 annual memberships that can be billed in $5 monthly installments. Additionally, anyone with an IDNYC can get 15 percent off their first year's membership.

“Bringing Citi Bike to all of the Upper East Side and Upper West Side is a great and necessary next step, but it captures how much work we still have yet to do,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “Citi Bike is a new transit option with the capacity to empower communities and fight inequality, so we are committed to bringing these docking stations further uptown to an even wider and more diverse audience – which I am proud to say is what we will be doing in the months ahead.”
