Fire Extinguished In Crypt Of Cathedral Of St. John The Divine

NEW YORK, NY – A small fire broke out Sunday morning in the crypt of The Cathedral of St. John The Divine in New York City. Firefighters were sent to the cathedral around 10:30 a.m. Sunday the FDNY told Patch. No injuries were reported and the cause of the blaze remains unknown.

The blaze was placed under control within an hour, the FDNY tweeted.

Rebecca Merrill, of the cathedral's communications team, told Patch in a statement that services would be held outside as the smoke clears and any damage is assessed.

"We will share more information as we learn it," she said. "We’ll be back in the Cathedral for Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter services."
