NYPD Car Burns Overnight On The Upper West Side: Police

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A NYPD car was found on fire early Wednesday morning on the Upper West Side, according to police.

The fiery cruiser was located on 83rd and Columbus Avenue, with police responding to reports of the fire at 3:52 a.m.

NYPD officers used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames both inside and outside the vehicle, said a police spokesperson.

How the police car caught on fire in the first place is still under investigation, but the vehicle was parked and unoccupied when the responding officers got to it, a police spokesperson told Patch.

However, the car's driver's side window was damaged and a "bunched-up paper" was thrown into the cruiser covered with what is believed to have been an accelerant to create a fire, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Despite the possible accelerant found in the car, police have not confirmed the fire as purposeful.

There are currently no suspects, and the incident is under investigation, said police.
