UPPER WEST SIDE, MANHATTAN — Lincoln Center's plaza and fountain will light up rainbow for the first time in its six-decade history this year in support of Pride Month, the venue announced.

The Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts said this week that its plaza, fountain and columns will stay lit in rainbow colors each night in June to help celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community. The venue will also fly the Pride flag in front of its campus.

"These activations acknowledge the histories, struggles, and contributions of LGBTQIA+ communities, and celebrate the full spectrum of queer identity," the venue wrote in a release.

The rainbow lights will become visible around dusk and stay on throughout the night.

They will be included throughout the Josie Robertson Plaza, including the columns of the buildings home to the New York City Ballet, Metropolitan Opera, and New York Philharmonic, and the iconic fountain, according to the venue.

The light demonstration comes as New Yorkers find new ways to celebrate Pride Month during the coronavirus crisis, which has restricted most in-person events.

New York City's Pride March and the organization's usual line-up of in-person events for June were postponed by the coronavirus pandemic.

Instead, a virtual rally will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 26, and a broadcast will be streamed on WABC Channel 7 that Sunday.
