The Upper West Side Has A New State Senator
The latest results from Tuesday's special election are in.
UPPER WEST SIDE, NY ā Councilmember Erik Bottcher has won Tuesday's special election for State Senator in the 47th Senatorial District, according to unofficial results released by the Board of Elections in the City of New York Tuesday night.
He will now fill a seat left vacant when Brad Hoylman-Sigal, who represented District 47 in the State Senate, was elected as Manhattan Borough President in November.
The special election was held on Tuesday, and the results were published as of 10:51 p.m. on election night.

Bottcher, running on both the Democratic and Working Families Party lines, secured a combined total of 12,084 votes. This represents 91.71 percent of the total votes cast, according to the New York City Board of Elections.
On the Democratic line, Bottcher received 9,984 votes, accounting for 75.77 percent. An additional 2,100 votes came from the Working Families Party line, making up 15.94 percent of the total.

Charlotte Friedman, the Republican candidate, received 1,001 votes. This accounted for 7.60 percent of the total ballots. Write-in candidates collectively garnered 91 votes, representing 0.69 percent of the total.
The Board of Elections reported that 98.92 percent of scanners had been counted by the time the unofficial results were posted. A total of 13,176 votes were tallied in the 47th Senatorial District special election.
Senate District 47 represents Manhattan's west side from the West Village through the Upper West Side, cutting off at West 103rd Street. Previously, Bottcher represented Chelsea, Hell's Kitchen, Greenwich Village and the West Village in City Council.
These unofficial results indicate Bottcher's strong support across the district. Official certification of the results will follow after all votes, including absentee and affidavit ballots, have been processed and verified.
In June, Bottcher will have to run another primary campaign for the regularly scheduled State Senate elections.
