UWS Resident And Doctor Honored With Lung Cancer Hero Award

Dr. Fred Hirsch was named as one of the four winners of the inaugural 2020 Lung Cancer Heroes awards.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — An Upper West Side resident and Manhattan doctor was named as of the four winners of the inaugural 2020 Lung Cancer Heroes awards.

The awards were given out by CURE Media Group, a media platform dedicated to cancer updates and research.

The Upper West Side resident and medical professional is Dr. Fred Hirsch, the executive director of the Center for Thoracic Oncology in The Tisch Cancer Institute at Mount Sinai.

Hirsch is known internationally for his work on lung cancer treatment and has spent more than 25 years researching the topic, according to a news release about the awards. He has received multiple awards throughout his career, including the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer Mary J. Matthews Award for Translational Research in Lung Cancer in 2007.

Hirsch's research is best known for creating a process that helps personalize lung cancer therapies, and explains how the specific therapies work and which patients have the best chance to benefit from them.

Mike Hennessy Jr., the president and CEO of MJH Life Sciences, which is the parent company of CURE Media Group, released a statement about all four of the doctors honored with the 2020 Lung Cancer Heroes award.

"Each of these esteemed individuals has contributed to improving the lives of lung cancer patients," Hennessy Jr. said in a news release. "We are so grateful to work with supporters such as Takeda and our advocacy groups to bring together the lung cancer community and celebrate these remarkable heroes for their amazing efforts."

Hirsch joined Mount Sinai's Tisch Cancer Institute team in March of 2019, which is also when he moved to the Upper West Side from Colorado.
