This UWS Street Is One Of The Noisiest In NYC, Study Shows
West 91st Street landed 18th on a list of the streets with the most noise complaints, making it the second loudest in Manhattan.

UPPER WEST SIDE, MANHATTAN — The Upper West Side is home to the second loudest street in all of Manhattan and one of the noisiest across the city, a new study found.
West 91st Street's 1,510 noise complaints in the past year landed it 18th on a PropertyClub list of the noisiest streets in New York City, topping all but one other Manhattan streets on the ranking. Only Seventh Avenue was noisier in Manhattan, ranking 13th on the list with 1,708 complaints.
For West 91st Street, almost all of the complaints were for loud music/partying — 1,412 came in under that category, 79 under banging/pounding, 15 for loud talking and 4 for loud televisions between January 2019 and February 2020, the study found.

But while those numbers may seem like a lot for the residents who called them in, researchers said the noise level is actually low compared to other noisier spots in the city.
"Compared to Brooklyn or the Bronx, Manhattan actually seems to be a lot quieter," researchers said.

All 17 other spots that topped West 91st Street, aside from Seventh Avenue, on the list of the Big Apple's noisiest streets were in the outer boroughs, with Brooklyn taking the title for the loudest of the five boroughs with a total of 56,741 complaints.
Queens' Eighth Street topped the list with 2,638 noise complaints in the past year.
For West 91st Street, it seems many of the noise complaints come from the New York City Housing Authority's complex between Columbus and Amsterdam avenues.
